vibration damper (harmonic balancer) and the crankshaft timing chain sprocket to the crankshaft. Once the damper is removed, the crankshaft should not be rotated unless special tool spacer T10368 has been installed. The crankshaft timing chain sprocket and spur gear drive on the crankshaft have a coupling that must be seated correctly during assembly. Failure to install special tool spacer T10368 before rotating engine will cause the engine to skip time and bend valves.

Incorrect torque converter or flywheel/flexplate installation can result in transmission damage.

Read full bulletin

When installing an engine, flywheel or transmission, please follow the installation procedures outlined in ELSA. For the flywheel/flexplate, please be certain the correct shim is installed between it and the crankshaft (reference VWIQ120). When installing a torque converter, press the torque converter hub through the seal as far as the first stop. Turn the torque converter while pushing toward the transmission using light force, until the cut outs in the torque converter hub lock into the pump wheel plate. The torque converter slides in. The torque converter is installed correctly if it is easy to turn by hand and if it fits evenly in the transmission bell housing. Additionally, it should spin freely when the transmission bell housing bolts are torqued to the engine block, prior to installation of the flywheel to converter bolts (reference VWIQ121).

displayed in the VIN search tool on the vw.com brand website. At this time, the only recall that will show with a pending status in the VIN search tool will be for 2009 model year Volkswagen Routan vehicles that have been added to Safety Recall 28G1. Due to parts supply issues, at this time Volkswagen is unable to begin repairing 2009 model year vehicles under the 28G1 recall. Therefore, code RNA1 has been temporarily assigned to the affected 2009 model year vehicles, in order to allow them to show in the VIN search tool as "Repair Not Yet Available." The RNA1 code will also be used to identify these vehicles in Elsa. An interim customer notification will be mailed to all affected 2009 MY Routan customers, advising them of the pending recall and letting them know that parts are not currently available. This notification will take place on or about August 29, 2014. Once parts become available, we will notify dealers and customers accordingly. If you have any questions or require additional assistance, please contact Warranty. As always, any press inquiries should be directed to Volkswagen Public Relations.
