This bulletin provides information related to a software update to the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to install the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) in order to protect the engine from excessive connecting rod bearing damage. This update is for some 2014-2016MY Soul (PS) vehicles produced from July 21, 2013 through August 11, 2016 equipped with Nu 2.0L GDI engines. The KSDS detects vibrations indicating the onset of excessive connecting rod bearing wear. It is designed to alert the driver at an early stage of bearing wear before the occurrence of severe engine damage, including engine failure. If vibrations caused by bearing wear start to occur, the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will blink continuously, and the vehicle will be placed in Limp Home Mode. This will reduce further damage to the engine and ensure that the vehicle occupants are not exposed to the risk of a more severe engine failure. At that time, Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1326, specific to the KSDS, will be recorded in the ECU. The vehicle can continue to be operated for a limited time in Limp Home Mode, but it will accelerate slowly and have a reduced maximum speed. Also, engine RPMs will be limited to approximately 1800-2000 RPM.

notified you that it was conducting a Product Improvement Campaign to perform a software update to protect the engine from excessive connecting rod bearing damage on the 2012-2016 MY Kia Soul vehicles equipped with the 1.6L Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI). However, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, we understand there may be challenges in taking your vehicle to the dealership for this update. We want to assure you that we are practicing the safety measures recommended by the CDC and local governments to maintain the best possible environments at our dealerships. The health and safety of our customers and employees are our top priority. If your Kia vehicle needs maintenance, service or repair for any reason, your local dealer is here to help and many have special programs designed to support your individual needs (details typically included on the dealers website). We would, however, like to assure you that there is no immediate need to have this software update performed. Once this challenging situation has passed, you can have this software update performed on your vehicle, and the warranty for the engine sub-assembly (short block) will be extended to 10 years from the vehicle in-service date or 120,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

SPECIAL SERVICE INFORMATION & SPECIFICATIONS FOR GDI HIGH PRESSURE FUEL SYSTEM - This bulletin has been revised to include additional information.
Read full bulletin
This bulletin provides information relating to all Kia vehicles equipped with Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines. In these engines highly pressurized gasoline is injected via a common fuel rail and injectors that deliver fuel directly into the combustion chamber of each cylinder. In comparison, in a conventional Multi-Point Fuel Injection (MPI) engine, the gasoline is injected into the intake port of each cylinder at a relatively low pressure. Due to high fuel pressure in a GDI system, servicing the GDI system requires special attention and handling procedures. This bulletin provides special service information and specifications for the GDI fuel system components.

Parking Distance Warning (PDW) alerts and repairs involving ultrasonic sensors. The PDW system alerts the driver while parking, by calculating distance based on the difference in signal transmission and reception times between the vehicle (ultrasonic sensor) and an object. The membrane film of the ultrasonic sensor is used for object detention and can be damaged by stone chips or foreign substances while driving. Damage to the cover of the ultrasonic sensor can also lead to damage to the internal circuit. As a result of this external damage, the PDW system may not receive the proper signal from the ultrasonic sensor. In some cases, the system may cause a false alarm, no alert, or phantom warnings by a Warning Lamp to be displayed on the cluster. The ultrasonic sensor membrane film should be always inspected for external damage and if any part replacement should be treated as a general repair, not as a warranty claim repair for this concern. (Please note that this Pitstop only applies to models/trims that are equipped with the ultrasonic sensors.)
