This activity involves inspecting and potentially replacing the driver?s airbag inflator assembly. Today, January 22, 2014, American Honda is announcing an expansion to this activity to include a small number of 2003 and 2004 Civic vehicles.

Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed that a Takata driver?s airbag inflator ruptured in the crash of a 2004 Honda Civic on July 10, 2017 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, resulting in the death of the driver. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family of the driver during this difficult time.

JUNE 15, 2015 HONDA TODAY ANNOUNCED THAT IT WILL INITIATE A NATIONAL RECALL TO REPLACE, FREE OF CHARGE, TAKATA PASSENGER FRONT AIRBAG INFLATORS INSTALLED IN CERTAIN 2001-2005 CIVIC AND 2003-2007 ACCORD MODELS SOLD IN THE UNITED STATES FOLLOWING A RECENTLY ANNOUNCED DEFECT DETERMINATION BY TAKATA. THE RECALL WILL ADD 1.39 MILLION PASSENGER FRONT AIRBAG INFLATORS NOT PREVIOUSLY SUBJECT TO EITHER A RECALL OR SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN.

IF THESE BOLTS ARE LOOSE FOR ANY REASON, SUCH AS THE ALTERNATOR WAS SERVICED OR AN ACCESSORY A/C WAS INSTALLED ON A DX MODEL AT THE DEALERSHIP, THE ALTERNATOR CAN OVERCHARGE AND FRY THE ECM/PCM. IF THE ALTERNATOR BOLTS ARE LOOSE, TIGHTEN THEM AND TRY RESTARTING THE ENGINE. IF IT STILL WONT START, THEN CHECK THE ECM/PCM CONNECTOR FOR BATTERY VOLTAGE AND GROUND. IF YOUR READINGS ARE GOOD, THEN REPLACE THE ECM/PCM."

However, due to the large number of affected units, American Honda is still in the process of populating the VIN status inquiry function on iN, which is expected to take several days. When this process is complete, American Honda will notify all dealers again via iN message. Until that time, the existing acknowledgement procedure must be used for all potentially affected vehicles.
