Some vehicles, equipped with a 2.4L engine and certified to the EPA Bin 4 emission standard and the California Cleaner Federal Vehicle option of Bin 4 emission standard, may exhibit catalytic converter and/or oxygen sensor performance degradation, without illumination of the malfunction indicator lamp (check engine light), as a result of excessive engine oil consumption (less than 2,000 miles [3,200 km] per quart [0.946 L] of engine oil) due to piston ring wear. This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 150,000 miles (241,400 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership. Determine if the vehicle has, or has been repaired for, an excessive engine oil consumption condition due to piston ring wear by: 1. Performing an excessive engine oil consumption test, or 2. Examining IVH or other service records to determine if a repair has been performed to remedy excessive oil consumption due to piston ring wear. If an engine oil consumption test indicates the vehicle currently has an excessive engine oil consumption condition due to piston ring wear, or if the vehicle has been repaired for an excessive engine oil consumption condition due to piston ring wear, replace the catalytic converters and oxygen sensors. See also Special Coverage bulletins 16118, N192291100 or N192291101 ?Excessive Engine Oil Consumption? for repair of engine and other components.

Determine if the vehicle has, or has been repaired for, an excessive engine oil consumption condition due to piston ring wear by 1. Performing an excessive engine oil consumption test, or 2. Examining IVH or other service records to determine if a repair has been performed to remedy excessive oil consumption due to piston ring wear. If the vehicle has, or has been repaired for, an excessive engine oil consumption condition due to piston ring wear, replace the catalytic converters and oxygen sensors. See also Special Coverage bulletins 16118, N192291100 or N192291101 ?Excessive Engine Oil Consumption? for repair of engine and other components. Note: The special coverage terms for excessive engine oil consumption may be different than the special coverage terms for the catalytic converter and oxygen sensor degradation. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.

with a 2.4L engine and certified to the EPA Bin 4 emission standard and the California Cleaner Federal Vehicle option of Bin 4 emission standard. The performance capability of the vehicle?s catalytic converters may have degraded, such that efficiency is reduced. In addition, the oxygen sensors may provide inaccurate information to the engine control module which manages engine combustion air-fuel ratios. If these conditions occur, tail pipe emissions may exceed allowed limits, without providing any notification to the driver. The malfunction indicator lamp (check engine light) will not illuminate. Dealers are to replace both catalytic converters and both oxygen sensors.

A customer may complain of misfires or roughness on cold start up with a P0300 diagnostic trouble code. Technician is to add coolant dye to the system and run the engine through warm up to circulate the dye. Pressurize the cooling system after a cold soak and inspect the cylinder with a bore scope for coolant dye. Dye is used to identify coolant over residual fuel being that might be left in the cylinder. The technician is not to replace the cylinder head as it will not correct this concern. In some cases it is necessary to remove the head for inspection. Do not replace the engine for small surface pock marks or a pitting appearance this is normal and do not connect to coolant passages. Usually if porosity is present there will be a break in the carbon ring. Only replace the engine if true porosity is found. Technician is to call Product Quality Center with the latest version of bulletin 02-07-30-029 if porosity is found and engine replacement is required.
