belt noise, rough idle, and/or Service Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp on. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code P0014 and or P0017. If a rough idle is duplicated a Diagnostic Trouble Code P0106 may also be stored. If Service Information diagnostics do not isolate the cause of this concern inspect the camshaft actuator solenoid screens. If of the three screen are missing replace the camshaft actuator solenoid. During the inspection of the camshaft actuator solenoid if none of the screens are missing then measure the crankshaft end play to determine if it is within the specification. Typically, if excessive crankshaft end play is causing this concern, it will be obviously out of specification by as much as .050 inch or more when a pry bar is used to move the crankshaft back and forth. If crankshaft end play is acceptable, replace the camshaft actuator solenoid. If the crankshaft end play is obviously out of specification, engine replacement is suggested. In some case dealer will need to contact General Motors Product Quality Center for further assistance.

Second issue may be a crank timing gear has a loose fit to the crank follow the current version of PIP3694. The third issue may be the crank end play is excessive see the current version of PIP3694. The forth issue is the cam actuator solenoid is restricted or screens are missing, see current version of PIP3694. The fifth concern may be a cam actuator is sticking, check the current version of PIP4913. Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code P0442. Technician will need to review Techlink article from May 2013 titled "Using the Evaporative Emissions System Tester" Technician will need to follow these steps to help diagnose the issue. First after the P0442 has been verified do not disturb any of the fuel system components. The technician now can use the scan tool to close the Evaporative Emissions System. If possible change the tank pressure sensor units from inch_H2O to milimeter_Hg for better resolution. Now the vehicle can be stared to monitor the tank pressure sensor output value for approximately two minutes. If the tank pressure sensor value does change, pressurize the fuel tank side of the purge solenoid with the GE 41413-A / J 41413-A and the necessary adaptors. Now add smoke and allow pressure to stabilize for 2 minutes. If smoke is allowed to pass through the purge solenoid, replace the purge solenoid. If the tank pressure sensor value does not change, then install CH-48096 adaptor between the purge line from the canister and the purge solenoid. With the Evaporative Emissions System closed, pressurize the system through the CH-48096 adaptor and allow the system to completely stabilize, by observing the Press / Vac Gauge for a minimum of 5 minutes. Now add smoke to the system with GE 41413-A / J 41413-A after system stabilization. Now inspect the purge solenoid, engine side, fuel cap, canister vent solenoid filter and any line quick connects. When the leak is unable to be located, test under a vacuum condition. his type of leak may be detected by using the scan tool Purge/Seal function to create a vacuum in the Evaporative Emissions System and then observe the FTP sensor parameter for vacuum decay.

Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Codes P1516, P2101, P2119, and/or P2176. Technician may find some vehicles may have an oil leak from the front or rear crank seal, cam cover gasket, or dipstick tube as well. Technician will need to determine if the concern is the result of a frozen positive crankcase ventilation system. To determine if the concern is the result of a frozen positive crankcase ventilation system on inline 4 and 5 engines disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation vacuum pipe that is attached to the rear of cam cover and inspect the inside of it for ice, moisture, and/or sludge. Also inspect the engine oil dipstick and engine oil fill cap for moisture, sludge, and/or ice. To determine if the concern is the result of a frozen positive crankcase ventilation system on inline 6 carefully disconnect the top or the bottom of the rubber positive crankcase ventilation vacuum hose that is between the #3 and #4 intake runners and inspect for ice. Also inspect the engine oil dipstick and engine oil fill cap for moisture, sludge, and/or ice. If the positive crankcase ventilation is not determined to be frozen follow Service Information diagnosis and any other bulletins or Preliminary Information that apply to the vehicle you are working on. If there is moisture, ice, and/or sludge in/on the oil fill cap, oil dipstick, and/or positive crankcase ventilation vacuum tube, this is most likely the result of a frozen positive crankcase ventilation system and the suggestions in the Preliminary Information should be followed. Technician should clean any ice, sludge, water out of the positive crankcase ventilation pipes, hoses and throttle body, and allow them to dry. Te

It provides the ability via a single selection within Techline Connect to first identify which modules need updating and then proceed to updating affected modules (with some exceptions). The updating of modules is completed in parallel instead of the technician needing to update one module at a time. This allows a more streamlined approach for dealers and customers.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have an inaccurate fuel gauge.

Read full bulletin

Technician should drive the vehicle to duplicate the concern. The fuel gauge will have a tendency to falsely indicate a lower fuel level than what is actually present. The fuel gauge will take a few minutes to show the correct fuel level. On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission no buffering takes place when the transmission is in park or neutral. This is a normal characteristic and no repairs are necessary. On vehicles equipped with a manual transmission the fuel gauge is buffered in all gears and neutral. There is a timer which starts to count up when the clutch is depressed. When this timer reaches its calibrated value the buffering stops. This is a normal characteristic and no repairs are necessary.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician with the axel setup information from American Axle Manufacturing.

Read full bulletin

Technician should be advised that the maximum pinion shim to be used or stacked behind the pinion is 0.050?, and the minimum pinion shim is 0.020? for an 8.6 axle. The range for available pinion depth shims for the 10.5? axle is 0.006? to 0.024?. When setting the backlash it should be set between 0.003? to 0.005? on a new ring and pinion for any American Axle Manufacturing application. The ring and pinion can be reused or adjusted if the mileage is less than 500 miles, if not used for towing. Technician should be advised that a ?roller coaster? or ?hourglass? pattern on the bearings may be normal up to 10,000 miles and possibly longer. With a mis-machined housing you may get a heel pattern on both sides of the gear teeth at build up can generally be corrected with backlash adjustments. When setting up an 8.6? axle with a 5 cut gear set is to use a 0.035? pinion shim and set backlash to 0.004?. When using the newer 2 cut gear set also use a 0.035? pinion shim and still set backlash to 0.004?. To set the gear pattern use backlash to adjust the pattern heel to toe. Use the pinion shim to adjust the height of the pattern. The proper drive pinion bearing pre-load is from 15 - 30 inch pounds with new bearings. The total torque to turn after the differential case is installed should increase 5 - 10 inch pounds at the pinion. A new pinion nut must be used whenever the old one is removed. The axle shaft end play specification is 0.012? per side and the radial specification is 0.002? - 0.003?. Technician should be advised that synthetic lube can be used in all new American Axle Manufacturing axle assemblies. The new pinion seal for the 8.6? axle assembly is a two piece design.
