ADJUSTER Valve Lash Customer's complaint may include a ticking noise coming from the engine.

Read full bulletin

Technician's observations can refer to spongy or stuck hydraulic lash adjusters. Exhaust lash adjusters found with a "spongy" condition (compressible plunger) leading to the assumption of being defective/malfunctioning. EXHAUST lash adjusters are designed to be COMPRESSIBLE by hand. Intake lash adjusters found with a stiff or stuck condition (non-compressible plunger) leading to the assumption of being defective/malfunctioning. INTAKE lash adjusters are designed to be NON COMPRESSIBLE by hand. Do Not Replace EXHAUST lash adjusters when the following condition is present: should be compressible, but they will exert a reactionary spring force during compression and return to full expansion without a compression force. Do Not Replace INTAKE lash adjusters when the following condition is present: should feel very firm and difficult to compress. Once the correct functioning of the intake and exhaust lash adjusters is validated with the procedure above, refer to the Service Manual "HYDRAULIC LIFTER(S) NOISE DIAGNOSIS" procedure. After the corresponding service procedures from the Service Manual involving the Lash Adjusters have been conducted, refer to the detailed instructions in the Service Manual to diagnose and/or service any other component.

These conditions may be related to worn intake camshaft high lift lobe(s), and intake rocker arm(s) high lift slider. High mileage failure (10,000-60,000 miles). 1. Remove the valve cover(s) per the released service procedures. The use of a stethoscope or DTC specific cylinder misfire codes can help to locate the condition to the left or right bank. 2. Once it has been visually confirmed that there is wear on the high lift intake lobe(s) & rocker arm(s) slider, there is a special service kit for this type of repair which should be used, instead of replacing the complete engine/long block. This kit contains the parts required for the repair (intake cam, rocker arms, sealer and gaskets). Once it is confirmed that the repair will be done using the camshaft/Rocker arms kit, it is also important to confirm that the vehicle being repaired has the latest calibration/software update for oil pump operation mode (high pressure mode) during engine start up. If no codes: Before replacing the key fob, use the steps below as a guide to proper diagnostics. Using the scan tool, verify that the RFHM module data shows the vehicle has both key fobs programmed for the subject vehicle. - If the key fob brought in with an issue is different from the key fobs programmed to the vehicle (not listed in the programmed section), and it is an OEM part, follow the proper procedure to pair new/additional key fobs. If the key fob of concern is shown in the programmed list to the subject vehicle, follow the below steps prior to any warranty related key fob replacement: 1. For Fobs with or without LED: i) Remove the coin battery from the key fob. ii) With a Voltmeter, verify that the coin battery has the correct voltage. iii) If the battery is low (below 2.6V), please replace the battery. 2. Test the performance of the key fob remote signal and its battery with the ATEQ VT56 tester to ensure good signal strength. Use the distance range performance at different vehicle parked locations to further test the RKE performance. PLEASE REFER SOL FOR COMPLETE STEPS."

Follow Service Diagnostics published prior to making any changes. Review any existing SOL or TSBs published for customer complaint issue. Only the Fuel Pump Module should be replaced if there are DTCs associated with the Fuel Level Sensor number 1. Only the Auxiliary Level Sender should be replaced if there are DTCs associated with the Fuel Level Sensor number 2. If there is a mixture of DTCs between the Fuel Pump Module and the Auxiliary Level Sensor, then investigate if there is a Jumper Harness or circuit issue between the Level Sender and the PCM. Verify fuel transfer between auxiliary tank and the primary tank by monitoring the auxiliary level sensor to verify it drops after driving.
