A customer may complain of misfires or roughness on cold start up with a P0300 diagnostic trouble code. Technician is to add coolant dye to the system and run the engine through warm up to circulate the dye. Pressurize the cooling system after a cold soak and inspect the cylinder with a bore scope for coolant dye. Dye is used to identify coolant over residual fuel being that might be left in the cylinder. The technician is not to replace the cylinder head as it will not correct this concern. In some cases it is necessary to remove the head for inspection. Do not replace the engine for small surface pock marks or a pitting appearance this is normal and do not connect to coolant passages. Usually if porosity is present there will be a break in the carbon ring. Only replace the engine if true porosity is found. Technician is to call Product Quality Center with the latest version of bulletin 02-07-30-029 if porosity is found and engine replacement is required.

Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code P0442. Technician will need to review Techlink article from May 2013 titled "Using the Evaporative Emissions System Tester" Technician will need to follow these steps to help diagnose the issue. First after the P0442 has been verified do not disturb any of the fuel system components. The technician now can use the scan tool to close the Evaporative Emissions System. If possible change the tank pressure sensor units from inch_H2O to milimeter_Hg for better resolution. Now the vehicle can be stared to monitor the tank pressure sensor output value for approximately two minutes. If the tank pressure sensor value does change, pressurize the fuel tank side of the purge solenoid with the GE 41413-A / J 41413-A and the necessary adaptors. Now add smoke and allow pressure to stabilize for 2 minutes. If smoke is allowed to pass through the purge solenoid, replace the purge solenoid. If the tank pressure sensor value does not change, then install CH-48096 adaptor between the purge line from the canister and the purge solenoid. With the Evaporative Emissions System closed, pressurize the system through the CH-48096 adaptor and allow the system to completely stabilize, by observing the Press / Vac Gauge for a minimum of 5 minutes. Now add smoke to the system with GE 41413-A / J 41413-A after system stabilization. Now inspect the purge solenoid, engine side, fuel cap, canister vent solenoid filter and any line quick connects. When the leak is unable to be located, test under a vacuum condition. his type of leak may be detected by using the scan tool Purge/Seal function to create a vacuum in the Evaporative Emissions System and then observe the FTP sensor parameter for vacuum decay.

Technician will remove the intake manifold and visually inspect for excessive carbon on the intake valve stems and top of the valve causing noise. If carbon is present then follow the latest version of PIP5029 to clean the valves or replace heads as needed. If there is no wear or discoloration, clean the oil passages and replace the head gasket. Technician will use chassis ears or a stethoscope; listen to the right and left side of the engine. Once the noise is isolated or if unable to isolate, remove the piston and rod assemblies from the affected bank(s) to inspect for either; a loose rod bushing in the rod, or a loose wrist pin in the bushing. Replacement labels with the correct fuel economy information were reprinted and shipped to invoicing dealers of record via FedEx Overnight delivery. We expected that all of these replacement labels would be delivered no later than May 17, 2016. However, we have received feedback from some dealers that labels for particular vehicles have not arrived as planned. We suspect that, in most cases, a dealer trade was involved and that the label was shipped to the original invoiced dealer. If a dealer trade was involved, contact the original invoiced dealer and request that the label be mailed. If a dealer trade was not involved request a replacement label via the BARS Reprint Request process.

GM just discovered an inadvertent error which affected the fuel economy information on the fuel economy labels. The error caused the EPA estimated fuel economy to be listed on the window label as 1-2 MPG higher (1L/100 KM lower) than it should have been. GM is stopping sale of the affected models until a corrected label is printed and affixed. GM will contact owners of the affected models to address this situation. This label error has no effect on the safety and operation of the vehicles. Dealers are to remove the fuel economy (Monroney) label and affix a corrected label to the vehicle.
