?ENGINE LEAK DIAGNOSIS ON TURBOCHARGED V8 ENGINES.

Read full bulletin

When diagnosing an engine oil leak or a coolant leak on turbocharged V8 engines it is necessary to use a borescope to identify if the source of the leak is from under the turbochargers. Engine oil or coolant leaking from the bell housing area or the front timing chain cover area may be caused by the turbocharger itself, a turbocharger oil/coolant feed line or turbocharger oil/coolant return line. Do not remove the transmission and do not dissemble the engine before performing this inspection. If necessary, use engine oil leakage detection dye.

N63 AND N63T ENGINE: ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION, ENGINE OIL TOP-UPS AND REFILL CAPACITY.

Read full bulletin

Customers with one of the vehicles above may complain that the engine's oil consumption is "too high," resulting in engine oil top-ups and workshop visits to address the issue before the vehicle displays an engine oil service as being "due." When the vehicle's engine oil drops to the minimum level, a message will display in the vehicle advising the driver to "add 1 quart of engine oil." After topping up and continued operation, the "add engine oil" message may display again before an engine oil service is required and performed. CAUSE Engines that are fitted with a turbocharger, as part of their normal operation, will consume engine oil at a higher rate than a naturally aspirated engine (non-turbocharged engine). In this case, a "turbocharged" engine could require topping up of the engine oil more frequently.

RAIN/LIGHT SENSOR (RLS): OIL LEAKAGE FROM GEL PAD.

Read full bulletin

??Oil leaking from the Rain/Light Sensor (RLS). Note: This oil serves as a separation medium between the RLS mounting gel pad and the windscreen. The oil ensures damage free disassembly in case of repair. CAUSE The oil that serves as the separation medium of the Rain/Light Sensor (RLS) gel pad and the windscreen leaks out. Expose the Rain/Light Sensor (RLS) and properly clean the area of all oily residue. Note: The separating oil usually leaks only once from the pad at the RLS. Due to the small oil quantity in the gel pad, additional oil leakage is not plausible. Leaking oil does not impair the function of the RLS.

Front Collision Warning Check Control Message Displayed in CID.

Read full bulletin

Occasionally while driving, a check control message (CCM) for Front Collision Warning is displayed in the Central Information Display (CID). This message is cleared from the CID by clicking on "OK" using the iDrive controller. CAUSE The KAFAS (camera-based driver support system) camera is affected by environmental conditions such as: * Direct sunlight (sunrise or sunset) * Rain * Fog * Dirt * Snow * Ice * High interior temperatures (may also cause a CCM to be displayed upon starting the vehicle) ?? Fault code 0x800AC0 - KAFAS camera switch off due to over temperature The pictures below show the direct sunlight causing the CCM: INFORMATION This is the current text in the Owner's Manual for the Front Collision Warning (FCW): The system may not be fully functional in the following situations: * In heavy fog, rain, sprayed with water or snowfall * In tight curves * If the driving stability control systems are limited or deactivated: for example, the DSC is off. * If the camera view field of the front windshield is dirty or covered. * Up to 10 seconds after the start of the engine, via the Start/Stop knob. Direct sunlight will be added as one of the causes for the FCW CCM.

External Engine Oil Leaks and Repairs.

Read full bulletin

During the vehicle's operational life, normal engine oil seepage or sweating, in addition to accumulated road dust, dirt and grime in the engine compartment can cause the appearance of a more severe oil leak. This is further exaggerated by residual oil that remains on the engine assembly after maintenance services are performed, e.g., oil filter changes, "engine oil top-offs," etc. If this visual appearance of accumulated oil on the engine assembly as an "active leak" is misinterpreted, unnecessary gasket repairs/replacements will result. Specifically, our analysis of the claim-related data for vehicles equipped with the engines noted in this bulletin is showing an above-average number of engine gasket repair/replacement claim submissions. The purpose of this bulletin is to provide your workshop with information and a procedure that will help in identifying engine oils leaks that do and do not require a repair.

Faults with the exhaust system that affect the monitoring of the DPF by the DDE 2. Unfavorable recent driving profile INFORMATIOM During normal driving, there is a continuous regeneration of the diesel particulate filter that takes place at exhaust-gas temperatures between 280 and 350C (slower oxidation process). The soot particles can only be burned off when the required exhaust-gas temperature has been reached. Under certain driving conditions (i.e., prolonged short trips or an exhaust system which never reaches soot burn-off temperatures), the DPF can become restricted. The DDE will initiate periodic regeneration automatically, at the latest after 600 miles. In vehicles making many short distance journeys, periodic regeneration takes place after only 250-500 miles. The Digital Diesel Electronics control unit evaluates the time for periodic regeneration from the following values: average distance driven average driving speed temperature in the diesel particulate filter values from the exhaust pressure sensor The DDE initiates the regeneration process by decreasing incoming air by the throttle valve, and one or two post injections are executed. This heats the exhaust-gas temperature to approx. 600 C . When the exhaust temp reaches this point: The soot is burned off with the residual oxygen. The

INFORMATION As of 11/2015, all Entry-NAV/Media head units supplied in new vehicles were upgraded for improved noise characteristics and quality. As a part of this upgrade, the hardware updating the sender lists was changed from an "update after every diversity reception interruption or maximum of four minutes" configuration to "regular interval updates (every four minutes) without regard to diversity reception status" configuration. This may cause a delay of up to four minutes for updates to the sender list when leaving areas of poor reception. The last received transmitter, before the entrance into underground car parking or a tunnel, is still received and will show station identification. This fixed interval update does not apply to Traffic Message Channel updates which remain active. This new equipment operation pattern may be noticed by the customer after replacement of their Head unit. All replacement Head units delivered since 01/2016 have the upgraded design. If the navigation system is not active and asking for the enabling code, turn off the ignition and wait for the head unit to enter sleep mode (approx. 3 minutes). After that, turn on the ignition again. The head unit will start up and the navigation system is activated. If the INITIAL NAV enabling code for first-time activation of the navigation system is not requested or delivered automatically, it still can be ordered manually through the Parts department and activated in the vehicle through the iDrive controller, by entering the 20-digit enabling code manually.

INFORMATION ""M"" vehicles are designed for high-performance, spirited driving. To accommodate this type of driving profile, a braking system which exceeds the standards for handling heavy brake forces, extreme temperatures, and excellent stopping power at high speeds is required. ""M"" vehicles can be ordered with the optional ultra high-performance braking system, featuring perforated carbon ceramic brake discs designed for circumstances similar to those encountered on racetracks. The carbon ceramic brakes were designed to improve braking efficiency, and dramatically increase braking performance along with a significant reduction in weight. When developing the carbon ceramic brake system, the main focus was on braking performance for the sporty-minded driver, while accepting the comfort limitations of functional noises at slower speeds and when coming to a stop. Please inform the customer that the carbon ceramic brake system's functional noises (squealing/honking), are a known characteristic for this type of material, and are only a small trade-off for the improved braking performance. These functional noises have no effect on the performance, operational reliability and durability of the brakes. Part replacement will not provide a remedy for the noise; this is a known characteristic of the high-performance brake system. More information on the performance and operation of these brakes can be found in the Owner's Manual under ""M carbon ceramic brake."" WARRANTY INFORMATION Not applicable."

Due to the design of the fixed caliper brake system, an unfavorable interaction between components may cause a squeaking noise.

INFORMATION 1. Visible cracks are caused by high thermal stresses during rapid heating and cooling of the brake discs. Braking from high speed with cold brake components (less than 212 degrees F) increases the likelihood of cracks to form. These surface hairline cracks are usually spread over the entire brake disc friction area, and have no negative influence on the durability or braking performance. The rotors should not be replaced only for their appearance reasons. When performing routine service on the brake system (pad replacement due to wear), the brake discs should be replaced if surface cracks are found to be greater than 13 mm, or if the brake disc thickness is below the minimum thickness. Always replace brake discs in pairs (per axle). Install new brake pads when replacing discs. By doing this, the service life of the friction pad surface is increased, and an even material loss is ensured. 2. Vibrations and/or steering wheel torsional vibrations during braking are caused by applying the brakes on discs with minimal to heavy corrosion. These vibrations are most noticeable when braking from high speeds with cold brake components (less than 212 degrees F), and will diminish with normal everyday operation. Parts replacement is not required. 3. After high brake loads, running noises can be heard when applying the brakes, and may also be heard to a limited extent after the brakes are released. (See the note in the Owner's Manual). These noises are reduced during normal everyday operation, due to further erosion of the brake pad friction lining. Visible surface cracks or craterlike recesses on the brake pad surface are caused by a minor difference in the material of the pad lining, which will decrease with further operation and should not be replaced due to their appearance.

CBS BRAKE PAD CALCULATION AND CORRECTION.

Read full bulletin

When a vehicle comes into the workshop for any repair or maintenance job, the bundling calculator recommends a brake maintenance checkup. No brake warning light is illuminated. CBS shows 3,107 miles or slightly higher for the next brake service displayed via Key Reader, or vehicle's Control Display (in Vehicle Info/Status/Service required/Brake pads) CAUSE CBS calculates the remaining brake pad wear based on brake pressure, speed, vehicle specific parameters (i.e. NAO pads), brake temperature as well as cumulative brake application time. Due to variation of these parameters and outside environmental influences, this calculation can deviate from the real brake pad wear. Starting from the above-mentioned production dates of the vehicles indicated, the CBS brake pad wear calculation has been changed, and is now based only on the brake pad wear sensor. Important Note: To avoid a too-slow wear prediction, the CBS brake model will estimate the need for repairs, in some cases, rather early. Calculation will level at 3,107 miles and stay at this value until the CBS brake pad wear sensor is triggered. https://www.bmwtis.net/tiscode/cgi-bin/bulletin.aspx?sie_path=/tsb/bulletins/htm_store/36...11/8/2016 Page 2 of 2 After the sensor is triggered, the CBS mileage will count down indicating to the customer that the brake repairs will be due.

designates changes to this revision SUBJECT Headunit High: Navigation System Road Map Usage. INFORMATION The Headunit High (HU-H), also called NBT, began replacing the Car Information Computer (CIC) on certain MY2013 vehicles with option 609. This change will affect the navigation system road map data support process and the warranty spare parts processes for the HU-H. For the US market, all vehicles will come pre-loaded from the factory with the latest navigation system road map database version that was available at the time of vehicle production. Therefore, there will be no physical copy of the navigation system road map data media DVD set or USB stick placed in these vehicles at the Vehicle Distribution Center (VDC). NOTE: Additionally, all replacement HU-H parts come with a pre-loaded version of the current available navigation system road map database installed. A set of DVD copies of the navigation system road map database, HU-H NAVI Road Map North America NEXT, is shipped to all BMW centers through the automatic tool shipment program with each release of a navigation system road map database. IMPORTANT: Additional copies or earlier NAV road map database versions cannot be ordered individually! Therefore, please take special care to archive the HU-H NAV road map DVD sets! The NAV road map data on the DVD set can also be installed into the Network Attached Storage (NAS). From there it then can be installed onto the HU-H in the vehicle, using the Integrated Service Technical Application for Programming (ISTA/P). For installation of the navigation system road map data media DVD set onto the Network Attached Storage (NAS), please contact your ISPI NEXT Administrator. In addition to this procedure, it is also possible to download the NAV road map data on the DVD set directly to the hard disc drive (HDD) integrated in the HU-H by inserting the DVDs one by one into the HU-H internal DVD
