INFORMATION An error has been identified in the current version of ETK regarding N55 fuel injector replacement part numbers and production dates. Installing the incorrect injector part number can lead to an erroneous Service Engine Soon lamp illumination and various mixture faults stored in the DME. Correct part numbers and applicable production dates: P/N 13 64 7 639 994 is for all vehicles produced from 7/2013 P/N 13 64 7 597 870 is for all vehicles produced up to 7/2013

The Service Engine Soon lamp and Engine Malfunction warning are illuminated, and the vehicle has reduced power output. Various faults related to VANOS operation are stored in the DME. While performing the test plan, the results may appear to be inconclusive because the fault will not clear from DME fault memory. CAUSE This is due to a programming error associated with ISTA/P 2.49 and lower. The error is corrected with ISTA/P 2.50.2 or higher.

INFORMATION The current version of ETK has an error on screen 13_1417: ""High -pressure pump/Tubing."" When selecting the high-pressure pump, the screen states ""only in conjunction with injector."" Disregard this statement and only replace the high-pressure pump. If injectors need to be replaced, enter the VIN of the vehicle into the ETK and select the part numbers found on screen 13_1416: ""High-pressure rail/injector/mounting."" The customer states that the engine malfunction warning lamp is illuminated, and while filling the fuel tank, the fuel gauge did not show the proper fill level. After the vehicle is driven a short distance, the fuel gauge will update to full. When diagnosed, the following fault is stored in the DME: ? FC 193208 Fuel level, plausibility: deviation between consumption and level change Please proceed to the Procedure section. Vehicles with option 610 (Head-Up Display) are not affected. Please follow the ISTA/D test plan for the applicable faults stored in the DME, including the one listed in this bulletin. CAUSE A software error in the instrument cluster causes the fuel gauge to incorrectly update while refilling. The error occurs when the vehicle is powered up after refilling.

Immediately after an engine start (start/stop button press), the gear selector is operated, but no drive position (D or R) can be engaged (transmission stays in P). The customer must operate the gear selector again to engage a desired drive position. Unfavorable software application Vehicle requires approximately 1 second after the start/stop button is pressed to establish a Drive Readiness status. If the gear selector is operated during this 1-second window, gear selection is not going to be executed and the gear shifter must be engaged again.

After engine start-up, a CCM (Check Control Message) for SOS malfunction is displayed in the Kombi and in the CID (Central Information Display). CAUSE When the vehicle is parked overnight the engine oil pressure will equalize and may leak past the turbo charger exhaust side turbine seal.

The customer complains that the Service Engine Soon lamp is illuminated. The vehicle has lost power; the engine cranks but will not start; and various faults are stored in the DME for engine misfire and/or mixture adaptations. CAUSE The vehicle has lost fuel system delivery pressure due to a loose or split fuel line inside the fuel tank. The failure is related to an unfavorable stacking of tolerances between the rubber fuel hose and the plastic regulator nipple or deterioration of the rubber hose construction material.

The upper crankshaft guide bearing may wear out prematurely. The wear on the upper guide bearing can cause the clutch pedal to malfunction during shifting. The Engine Malfunction warning may be illuminated and a fault will be stored in the DME memory for the crankshaft sensor. Noise may be heard from the lower engine and transmission bell housing area. The complaint may include any of the following symptoms: * The engine stalls immediately after a cold start before driving away * The engine may run roughly or misfire after a cold start * The engine does not start cold or may take several attempts * To assist starting when cold, the accelerator may need to be depressed slightly and the idle speed raised for a few seconds so the engine does not stall This can occur most frequently at outside ambient temperatures between -15C and + 15C. It is possible that the Service Engine Soon (MIL) lamp is on with misfire fault(s) stored, but it is equally possible that there will be no faults stored in the DME. Unfavorable DME software Cold start or idling problems may arise due to poor fuel quality. The use of summer fuel during cold outside temperatures may also lead to such problems.

Certain areas of the US experience extremely cold climate conditions during the winter months, which can cause the Service Engine Soon lamp to illuminate while the engine temperature is increasing to full operating temperature. The following fault may be stored in the DME: ??FC 2D9B Knock Sensor, Signal CAUSE Unfavorable DME knock sensor diagnostic at outside ambient temperatures below -5 C

The RHT frame is bent or twisted and cannot be operated in either direction, or the roof shells are not stacking properly. The hydraulic roof cylinders operate out of sequence causing the frame to twist.

The ISTA/D diagnostic test plan does incorporate a VANOS bleed function, but it does not advise the technician to bleed the VANOS system after a VANOS or engine oil supply component replacement. CAUSE This is due to an error in the current level of ISTA/D. The error will be corrected with ISTA/D 2.41.0.

The EPS fails briefly when starting the engine. FC 4823E1 is stored in the EPS_20 control unit. CAUSE Specific undervoltage situation during engine starting.

??Oil leaking from the Rain/Light Sensor (RLS). Note: This oil serves as a separation medium between the RLS mounting gel pad and the windscreen. The oil ensures damage free disassembly in case of repair. CAUSE The oil that serves as the separation medium of the Rain/Light Sensor (RLS) gel pad and the windscreen leaks out. Expose the Rain/Light Sensor (RLS) and properly clean the area of all oily residue. Note: The separating oil usually leaks only once from the pad at the RLS. Due to the small oil quantity in the gel pad, additional oil leakage is not plausible. Leaking oil does not impair the function of the RLS.

BMW centers must ensure recalls are completed after having been notified by BMW of North America, LLC (BMWNA) that a safety-related defect or noncompliance exists in any motor vehicle or item of replacement equipment in the center's possession at the time of notification. Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if a recall campaign is announced by BMW NA, centers must ensure that all recalls on new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are completed BEFORE delivery to the consumer. Due to production restrictions at Plant Oxford, certain F56 vehicles produced in May and June of this year cannot be built with the factory option for the contrasting roof and/or mirror caps. INFORMATION As of September 2009 production, a new generation Tire Pressure Monitor System has been introduced for all 3 Series models. Although the basic operation of the system is similar to the previous version, there are several key differences between the two systems. The new system consists of five components: One central antennae with an integrated control module (5) mounted in the right rear wheel arch Four wheel electronics (1-4) mounted at the base of each tire valve. Central antennae with integrated control module The control module and central antennae have been combined in a single housing. This new control module has the ability to send requests for information to each of the 4 wheel New style wheel electronics The wheel electronics consist of a plastic housing with integrated circuitry. The Service Engine Soon light is on. Fault Code 1D2008: Map thermostat: jammed open is stored in the DME. There may also be a complaint of low heat output with lower outside temperatures. CAUSE During the engine warm-up, the engine coolant does not reach operating temperature within the DME's allowable time limits. This is caused by either a faulty thermostat inside the transmission oil heat exchanger or a faulty engine characteristic map thermostat.

ConnectedDrive/BMW Assist features are partially or completely inoperative. This Service Information bulletin is being published because vehicles are down for an extended period of time when researching system failures with ConnectedDrive or BMW Assist. This Service Information bulletin will assist you both in identifying the issue and providing technical support. Occasionally while driving, a check control message (CCM) for Front Collision Warning is displayed in the Central Information Display (CID). This message is cleared from the CID by clicking on "OK" using the iDrive controller. AFFECTED VEHICLES This Service Action involves F30 3 Series vehicles produced from June 2012 to January 2013. First check if a Service Action label with a code number 670 is already attached to the B-pillar. If a code number 670 has been punched out, the Campaign has already been performed and no further action is necessary. Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as "Open" when checked either in the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.

During the vehicle's operational life, normal engine oil seepage or sweating, in addition to accumulated road dust, dirt and grime in the engine compartment can cause the appearance of a more severe oil leak. This is further exaggerated by residual oil that remains on the engine assembly after maintenance services are performed, e.g., oil filter changes, "engine oil top-offs," etc. If this visual appearance of accumulated oil on the engine assembly as an "active leak" is misinterpreted, unnecessary gasket repairs/replacements will result. Specifically, our analysis of the claim-related data for vehicles equipped with the engines noted in this bulletin is showing an above-average number of engine gasket repair/replacement claim submissions. The purpose of this bulletin is to provide your workshop with information and a procedure that will help in identifying engine oils leaks that do and do not require a repair.

The blower motor regulator has an internal fault; after starting the engine, there may be a delay of up to a minute before the blower motor comes on CAUSE Faulty blower motor regulator (output stage)

There is an intermittent whirring noise from the IHKA system when the engine is under load between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm, and sometimes at approximately 5,000 rpm. CAUSE Vibrations from the A/C low-pressure hose are resonating into the heating and air conditioning system.

During opening or closing the sunroof, one or more of the following situations may occur: 1. The sunroof becomes stuck 2. One-touch open and close no longer works 3. The sunroof moves in small steps. When driving with high outside ambient temperatures, repeated stop and go, or high load operation over longer distances, the engine performance can be reduced. The air-conditioning system blower output may also be reduced, and in some circumstances the compressor is switched off. There could be any of the following faults stored depending on the conditions present at the time. DME * Fault 1A2108: Electric fan, self-diagnosis, interval stage 1: Minor fan fault EGS (also possibly set) * Fault 421722: DME/DDE interface: Forced upshift due to thermal engine protection request IHKA (possibly set without DME or EGS faults) * Fault 801224: Air conditioning compressor: Shut-down due to excess pressure in refrigerant circuit * Fault 801228: Blower output stage: Blower output reduction due to power management The Service Engine Soon lamp (MIL) would not be illuminated in these situations. 1. A DME software error in the control of the 850W electric fan over-boost or high speed function. 2. The electric cooling fan design was not robust enough for continuous over-boost or high speed operation.

A shudder or vibration can be felt under light acceleration or when driving at constant suburban speeds. This can be most noticeable in the 1700 - 2200 engine rpm range while in 3rd through 6th gears. No faults are stored in the EGS module. CAUSE Changes in the frictional properties of the automatic transmission fluid over time can lead to momentary slipping of the torque convertor lock-up clutch.

The Service Engine Soon light is on. Fault Code 1D2008: Map thermostat: jammed open is stored in the DME. There may also be a complaint of low heat output with lower outside temperatures. CAUSE During the engine warm-up, the engine coolant does not reach operating temperature within the DME's allowable time limits. This is caused by either a faulty thermostat inside the transmission oil heat exchanger or a faulty engine characteristic map thermostat.

The current version of EPC does not provide all available options for the engine oil filters used in the N20 and N55 engines produced with a ""plastic"" oil filter housing. The illustration below will help identify the proper engine oil filter application until the EPC is corrected."

There is an engine oil leakage under the vehicle, or the vehicle smells of engine oil. The cylinder head cover gasket is leaking engine oil due to loose retaining bolt(s).

The erroneous misfire faults are stored, and the Service Engine Soon light (MIL) illuminates The ISTA Service Function to delete the DME adaptations fails to clear the crankshaft incremental wheel adaptation, depending on the current DME software version. This adaptation must be cleared whenever the following repairs are made: 1. Replacement of the crankshaft position sensor 2. Replacement of the incremental sensor wheel on the crankshaft 3. Replacement of the crankshaft 4. Replacement of the crankcase (block) with pistons 5. Replacement of the engine assembly Due to slight tolerance differences with the new replacement hardware and the original learned crankshaft position, values could cause cylinder balance calculation errors by the DME. The Service Engine Soon light is on (MIL) with only the following oxygen sensor fault stored. 118602 - Oxygen sensor before catalytic converter, fine mixture control: exhaust gas after catalytic converter too lean CAUSE An actual engine related problem and/or DME software diagnostic.

After the ignition is turned off and the vehicle is locked, the heating and air conditioning blower motor runs continuously. The next time the vehicle is started there may be the CCM (Check control message) displayed for ""Increased battery discharge"". CAUSE The blower output stage receives an invalid LIN bus signal during operation and switches to emergency mode. The blower will continue to run with the specified emergency mode after the ignition is turned off and the vehicle is locked."

There is a shudder or vibration from the driveline when taking off from a stop, or when accelerating at highway speeds. CAUSE Possible multiple root causes related to the engine, wheels & tires, suspension components or internal wear on the clutch plates of the xDrive transfer case.

When starting a cold engine, blue smoke can be seen emitting from the exhaust tailpipe for approximately 10-20 seconds. No turbo charger boost faults are stored and no drivability issues can be detected. Engine oil leakage into the induction system and/or the turbo charger assembly.

Vehicles at ports of entry will be remedied prior to dealer delivery. On affected vehicles, there is an incorrect label regarding the appropriate engine oil. Under these conditions, the vehicle starts. Various power management faults can occur. The check control message (ID 229) is caused by a heavily discharged battery. ? The check control message is triggered when the current state of charge (SoC) of the battery approaches the minimum SoC that is required to start the vehicle (start capability limit). ? In low outside ambient temperatures, the start capability limit of the vehicle is higher. Therefore it takes more energy from the battery to start a cold engine. ? Without the early warning of the check control message, the current state of charge would drop below the start capability limit and the vehicle would not start. ? The vehicle's intelligent power management system actively takes measures to increase the charge of the battery, such as increasing idle speed and reducing or shutting down certain electrical consumers.

INFORMATION The valve stems are single-use only, and must be replaced every time the wheel electronics are replaced. If you loosen the nut (1), you must replace the valve stem. The vehicle judders or surges repeatedly while accelerating in hot ambient temperatures between 3,000 RPM and 5,000 RPM. The soot particles can only be burned off when the required exhaust-gas temperature has been reached. Under certain driving conditions (i.e., prolonged short trips or an exhaust system which never reaches soot burn-off temperatures), the DPF can become restricted. The DDE will initiate periodic regeneration automatically, at the latest after 600 miles. In vehicles making many short distance journeys, periodic regeneration takes place after only 250-500 miles. The plastic fuel tank has two openings, one at the top right and the other at the top left. The top right opening (passenger's side, serviceable) provides a mounting point and repair access to the intake fuel pump/level sensor assembly. The top left opening (driver's side, non-serviceable) serves as an access point for the installation of the suction jet pump/level sensor assembly during the fuel tank manufacturing process. After these components are installed, the top left side opening is then permanently closed and sealed with the installation of a circular Coex biopolymer plastic cover plate which is welded into place. Over time, the left side opening plastic cover plate weld may become damaged. Should this occur, there is the possibility of fuel leakage. While driving, the Lane Change Warning (Blind Spot Detection) is illuminated erroneously on either outside mirror (orange triangle) when no other vehicles are around. CAUSE F30 - Install the correct sensor frame F34 - Program the vehicle using ISTA/P 3.58.0 or higher.

The low washer fluid warning light is illuminated even though the washer fluid tank is full. There are no faults stored in the system for the washer fluid level switch. CAUSE A non-approved washer fluid is used (fluids that contain a silicone additive, normally colored other than blue). INFORMATION The washer fluid level sensor is a contactless capacitive sensor. The sensor sends a low fluid level signal to the gateway module (FEM - Front Electronics Module or BDC - Body Domain Controller) which in turn displays a low washer fluid warning in the instrument cluster. The use of a ""non-approved"" washer fluid (silicone-based fluid) can cause the low fluid warning light to come on even when the reservoir is full. Refer to ISTA document ""FB-GZ-B17A-F20 Washer fluid level sensor"" for information on how this capacitive sensor operates."

After the transport mode is deleted (during the QC1), a BMW Assist (SOS) test call is made by pressing the SOS/ E-Call button. However, the call only connects via voice (no data is transmitted). The operator indicates that a crash call has been sent. ATM fault code ""B7F348 - Provisioning without signature OTA"" is stored. The provisioning of the ATM (Advanced Telematics Module) has failed."

If an NBT-EVO head unit is swapped into a different vehicle it will enter a locked mode once it recognizes a different VIN. This will require REPLACEMENT of the head unit to restore operation. To prevent easy re-use of stolen Head units additional features are introduced with 11/15 ISTA/P software to bring NBT-EVO to a higher security level. In NBT-EVO the mechanism is called ""Trusted VIN"""

For audio system speaker testing there is a NED (Non Electrical Diagnosis) Test Plan available. CAUSE We previously recommended use of the Audio Test CD (ATC) from BMW. This CD has been discontinued.

SUBJECT Check Control Messages Related to Battery Charge during Cold Ambient Temperatures. On cold days (an outside ambient temperature below 15F), customers may notice a check control message related to the battery displayed on the instrument cluster and the control information display. The check control message (ID 229) is caused by a heavily discharged battery. The check control message is triggered when the current state of charge (SoC) of the battery approaches the minimum SoC that is required to start the vehicle (start capability limit).

INFORMATION Documents have been developed showing the known correct statuses for all hall sensors and micro switches used to operate the retractable hard top (RHT). This document is intended to act as a supplement to the diagnostic information available in ISTA. Comparing these statuses to the actual statuses of a vehicle with a functional problem may assist in narrowing down which sensor/switch is contributing to the functional problem. For E93, the status request may be found by connecting the car to ISTA and selecting: Control module functions/CTM Convertible top module/Diagnosis Requests ?Sensors/Switches For F33/F83, the statuses should be checked using the applicable test plan as instructed in attachment B54 09 07 F33 F83 RHT Status.pdf. For I15, the statuses should be checked using the applicable test plan as instructed in attachment B54 09 07 I15 Top Status.pd

The remote control buttons operate incorrectly after programming and coding using ISTA/P 2.47.x. or later. * Vehicles without option 302 (Alarm System): the 3rd button unlocks the entire vehicle instead of just opening the trunk. * Vehicles with option 302 (Alarm System): the 4th button panic mode siren does not work; the entire vehicle unlocks. CAUSE Front Electronic Module (FEM) coding error

The Check Control message ""Adaptive Headlights Failed"" is displayed in the Central Information Display (CID). All headlights are functioning properly. One or more of the following fault codes are stored in the FEM (Front Electronic Module): * 0x8041BA - Adaptive headlight (AHL): system defective * 0x8041F8 - Right headlight driver module (HDM): AHL error * 0x8041FB - Left headlight driver module (HDM): AHL error CAUSE Software error in the (HDM) Headlight Driver Module"

The electrical system of BMW vehicles has been subject to an ongoing development process over the last few years. This has led to increased demands being placed on the battery. This document covers important information for the dealer on how to handle ""discharged battery"" complaints. A discharged battery can have various causes, most of which do not concern the battery itself. A failed battery is often the symptom and not the cause. A fully serviceable battery fails when an electrical component causes the battery to discharge; the battery becomes internally damaged and must be replaced. For more information, refer to www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-42B.htm For this reason, replacing the battery is not usually a permanent repair. The cause of the discharged battery must be analyzed in order to guarantee a proper repair. In order to properly repair the vehicle the first time in the workshop, it is very important that the diagnostic test plans are performed to completion with all results taken into to consideration. The procedure as outlined below contains information that will guide the technician into properly repairing the vehicle and getting paid for a warranty claim. CAUSE Refer to the ""Procedure"" section of this Service Information for details."

Intermittently, the stored FM radio stations default to FM 87.7 after vehicle start-up. CAUSE 1. Low battery voltage or voltage drop at the head unit 2. Radio station preset contains FM 87.7 3. Remote key memory not set correctly or the setting is lost

REP 65 77 604, ""Replacing sensor mat (OC3 mat) for passenger seat occupancy detector."" 1. When the new mat is installed in the vehicle, too much pre-load pressure will prevent the mat from being enabled. ISTA/P WILL NOT enable the new part, and will cause permanent damage to it. 2. The new part has incorrect coding."

Various warning lamps and check control messages relating to the ACSM and ICM systems are illuminated. Many ""No Message"" faults are stored for various control modules. The ACSM and ICM modules may also not be responding to a vehicle test in ISTA. CAUSE Ground point Z10*10B is loose."

The corrosion protection on the outside of the trunk (back of rear right-hand wheel arch) around the battery positive connector is insufficient, and leads to corrosion on the body. AFFECTED VEHICLES This Service Action involves F30 vehicles which were produced from 9/2011 to 10/2012. In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Service Action completed or is affected by this Service Action, first check the B-pillar label for code number 645. If code number 645 has been punched out, the campaign has already been performed. If code number 645 has not been punched out, it will be necessary to utilize the ""Service Menu"" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action."

One, or both of the scenarios listed below may be encountered: 1. The message ""Device not supported"" is displayed in the CID after connecting a USB device to the USB port using a USB cable. 2. The ""USB option"" in the menu cannot be selected (grayed out), after the vehicle was programmed with ISTA/P 2.50.2, or 2.50.3: I-Level F020-13-07-503, or F020-13-07-505. CAUSE 1. Incompatible USB cable is being used 2. Head Unit Basic software error 1 The following procedure should be performed for ""Situation 1, Cause 1"" listed above: Part A (Steps 1 to 3) 1. Duplicate the issue. 2. Verify that the USB cable which is being used, is the original cable for the device and not an aftermarket cable. 3. If the issue is resolved when using an original USB cable supplied by the manufacturer of the device, do not perform step 4 listed below. No further action is required. Part B (Step 4) 4.If the issue is still present when using the original cable from the device manufacturer, proceed to program and code the vehicle using ISTA/P 2.51.0 or higher. ? I-Level after programming would be F020-13-11-501, or higher. Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software. The customer may complain of reduced air flow when the air conditioning system is operated for an extended time, usually longer than one hour. The complaint can vary due to one or more of the following variables: * High outside ambient temperature * Too much humidity * A/C temperature and fan settings set too low for too long Note: It is very difficult to duplicate this issue due the required outdoor weather conditions and length of driving time needed. CAUSE Evaporator starts to freeze up due to the position of the evaporator temperature sensor

The replacement OC3 seat mat (front passenger seat occupancy) will not enable when following ISTA Repair Instruction REP 65 77 604, ""Replacing sensor mat (OC3 mat) for passenger seat occupancy detector."" When the new mat is installed in the vehicle, too much pre-load pressure will prevent the mat from being enabled. ISTA/P WILL NOT enable the new part, and will cause permanent damage to it."

INFORMATION Starting with the introduction of the F10 (5 Series), an advanced intelligent battery sensor has been used. This now makes it possible for the vehicle to monitor the condition of the battery in order to determine if the battery needs to be recharged or replaced, along with the remaining capacity of the battery. The analysis and testing of the battery's SoC (State of Charge) and SoH (State of Health) is now performed using ISTA (Integrated Service Technical Application) diagnosis. A separate test using a battery tester is no longer needed.

The low coolant level warning may come on in the information display. CAUSE Insufficient contact at the electrical connector for the coolant level sensor causes an inaccurate reading of the coolant level.

BMW Online/BMW ConnectedDrive not functional. Vehicle and service cockpit have different ICC-ID's (Integrated Circuit Card Identifier).

The customer states that the seat belt extender ""handover"" on the front driver's or passenger side failed to deliver the belt. One or more of the following situations may apply: * The safety belt extender extends but the belt slips off. * The ""hand"" on the extender fails. * The safety belt is twisted. * The extender will not operate and makes noise while extending. S One or more of the following causes may apply: 1. The safety belt is incorrectly positioned. 2. The ""hand"" on the extender has mechanically failed. 3. The safety belt slips off the ""hand"" due to excessive resistance from the seat belt reel, not allowing the belt to extend properly. The seat belt is twisted. 4. The safety belt slips off the ""hand"" due to the belt material being excessively worn. 5. The safety belt extender fails to extend or retract intermittently due to FRM (Footwell Module) software. 6. The safety belt extender is noisy or inoperative, due to a communication problem or incorrect power or ground."

Software error in the REM (Rear Electronic Module)

The navigation system information (turn advice - arrow view) is no longer displayed on the Head-up Display (HUD). Turning the ignition on and off doesn't resolve the issue. Application error between the instrument cluster and the Head-up Display

Customer Support Program as outlined in the Takata Settlement Customer Support Program Overview attachment. This ?component-specific? customer support program applies only if there is a defect in materials or workmanship of the Takata driver?s side airbag module in a listed vehicle.

After the high voltage (HV) charging procedure, the stationary climate control (aka preconditioning) does not work. This is part of the normal design. There is no fault or defect.

After the FEM (Front Electronic Module) is replaced, ISTA/P states ""The vehicle order could not be read from the vehicle. Import of the vehicle order required."" The replacement FEM does not contain the vehicle-specific data, including the Vehicle Order (VO). The proper ISTA/P parts replacement procedure was not performed."

Learn the safety features and operation of the front seat and crash-active headrest. Photos A and B: In the event of an accident, the rear passenger must be able to move the front seatback forward, regardless of the seat position. This allows the rear passenger an easy exit from the rear seat of the vehicle, even if the electrical power source is no longer available. 2. When the seatback is manually moved, the headrest must have free movement throughout the full range of the seatback. Photos C and D: The headrest and seatback must be able to move fore and aft without contacting the roof or sun visor, regardless of seat position. The headrest height will automatically adjust to maintain this clearance, regardless of seat position. 3. In case of an accident, the crash-active headrest will be automatically activated forward to reduce the distance between the occupant's head and the headrest. This results in increased safety for the occupant. Photo E shows the headrest in the normal position. Photo F shows the headrest in the ""active"" position and will not contact the roof. While trying to activate the horn, one or both horns fail to work. One or more of the following fault codes can be stored in the FEM: "8044A3 - Wiring, horn short circuit to earth" "8044A4 - Wiring, horn short circuit to positive" "8044A5 - Wiring, horn relay is defective or short circuit to positive" Water has entered the horn and caused it to fail internally (shorted out).

The vehicle's battery state of charge is very low after the vehicle was parked for a longer period of time (e.g., overnight). The RAD2+ radio doesn't allow the vehicle to enter full sleep mode, and causes a current draw from the battery with ignition off.

Intermittently the check control message "Front Passenger Restraint System Faulty" is displayed in the Central Information Display. The following information is read from the vehicle: 1. Key Reader Vehicle Defects Details shows DTC: 930AB3. 2. ISTA fault code "930AB3-POL: indicator lamp for passenger airbag deactivation: short-circuit to plus" The fault condition is not present. 3. ISTA check control message ID 109 CAUSE FZD (Operating Unit for Roof) software error causes the POL (Passenger Airbag Off Lamp) to intermittently malfunction.

A change in the job structure in ISTA causes the BDC to open the 30B relay unexpectedly.

When diagnosing with ISTA or ISTA Next, a fault code (detailed below), regarding the cell voltage measurement, is entered in the battery management electronics (SME). ? 21F0C2 - High-voltage battery, cell supervision circuit 1: Voltage measurement (battery cell), line disconnection ? 21F0C3 - High-voltage battery, cell supervision circuit 2: Voltage measurement (battery cell), line disconnection ? 21F0C4 - High-voltage battery, cell supervision circuit 3: Voltage measurement (battery cell), line disconnection ? 21F0C5 - High-voltage battery, cell supervision circuit 4: Voltage measurement (battery cell), line disconnection ? 21F0C6 - High-voltage battery, cell supervision circuit 5: Voltage measurement (battery cell), line disconnection The customer might not have reported the situation as the fault code could have no effect on the vehicle operation. Erroneous fault in the fault memory of the SME, possible fault in a cell supervision circuit (CSC) or a cell module.

After programming the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.47.1, unlocking the trunk with the remote changes to unlocking all the doors. An application error occurred after programming the vehicle to the Personal Profile Setting (PIA) in the Front Electronic Module (FEM).

AHL (Active Headlight Control) malfunctions on both sides. Both lights aim either up or down while driving. Fault Code 8041B6 is present. Broken mounting bolt holding on the rear height sensor bracket.

Butyl adhesive is used to secure the seals of the retractable hardtop (RHT) to the steel roof shell panels. Particularly at high ambient temperatures, if excess butyl is present, it may start to seep out from between the seal and the roof shell. This butyl may be black or gray in color. Excess butyl applied to the roof shell during assembly

INFORMATION There has been a disruption in the production and supply chain of certain electronic components. These events have influenced global manufacturing facilities, including the automotive sector. The following points apply to vehicles produced during the period listed above: * The Tire Pressure Monitor System continues to meet all federal requirements. * When a low tire pressure condition is detected, a general system warning is issued. The warning will be displayed in the instrument cluster (KOMBI) and/or Control Display, depending on the vehicle's equipment level (refer to the attachment). * When a driver is alerted to a low pressure condition, all four tires should be inspected for damage and proper inflation. The system components, wheel electronics and central antennae/module are fully compatible with current replacement parts. This functional change represents a running production change and is not a defect in materials or workmanship. Any further changes to the system function or components will be communicated in a future bulletin. It is imperative that all service personnel be familiar with these changes. WARRANTY INFORMATION Not applicable.

CAUSE Both sides are aiming downwards: * The most likely cause is a faulty or disconnected rear height sensor. In very extreme cases due to poor road conditions, both headlight assemblies could have the vertical aim ball socket adjuster disconnected, as noted below. Only one side is aiming downwards: * The cause could be a ""disconnected"" vertical aim ball socket adjuster, resulting from excessive road vibration or sharp impacts (pot holes) through the suspension to the headlight assembly. Important Note: Follow the procedure outlined in this bulletin first; replacing headlight assemblies for a vertical aim ball socket adjuster issue is an excessive repair."

INFORMATION Important: The INITIAL NAV enabling code no longer needs to be pre-ordered through the Parts department! When the vehicle is connected to the diagnostic system ISTA to perform PDI/QC1, the step to activate the navigation system (part of Delete Transport Mode) will automatically request the INITIAL NAV enabling code (VIN-specific) without pre-ordering the enabling code. This enabling code will be automatically delivered through ISTA and it then activates the navigation system. Note: This VIN-specific NAV enabling code is then also automatically stored in the Repair Kit in the Aftersales Assistance Portal (ASAP). The automated INITIAL NAV enabling code request and activation of the navigation system will take no longer than 1 minute. After finishing "Delete Transport Mode," the navigation system in the vehicle will be active without entering the 20-digit INITIAL NAV enabling code manually or in ISTA. If the navigation system is not active and asking for the enabling code, turn off the ignition and wait for the head unit to enter sleep mode (approx. 3 minutes). After that, turn on the ignition again. The head unit will start up and the navigation system is activated. If the INITIAL NAV enabling code for first-time activation of the navigation system is not requested or delivered automatically, it still can be ordered manually through the Parts department and activated in the vehicle through the iDrive controller, by entering the 20-digit enabling code manually.

While driving, a rattling-type noise is heard coming from the lower windshield area up behind the instrument panel (driver's side). CAUSE The TRSVC (Top Rear Side View Camera) control module support bracket is loose.

Background noise (buzzing, crackling, static) can be heard: * At low audio volume * When the radio is turned off * When the ignition is turned off NOTE: Background noise stops when the radio enters sleep mode. IMPORTANT: Background noise is more noticeable on vehicles produced before 09/2009 in case a RAD2+ replacement radio was installed previously. RAD2+ radio concept, manufactured from July 2009 to February 2014

According to the customer, the airbag warning light was on, but it may not be on when the vehicle arrives in the workshop. ACSM fault code ""930A60 - Seat occupancy detection, front passenger; malfunction"" is stored. The fault may or may not currently be present. CAUSE The front passenger seat occupancy mat consists of a seat occupancy mat with a capacitive sensor system. This means a front passenger is detected by measuring the resistance of the human body. The fault is set when moisture is detected on the mat itself."

Rattling noises can be heard from the rearview mirror when driving. CAUSE The mirror electrical connector is loose in the mirror base.

INFORMATION Do not replace any parts. NOTE: First time activation of the navigation system should always be performed during the Quality Certification 1 (QC1) Pre-Delivery Check, with the vehicle connected to the diagnosis system ISTA. Refer to SI B65 30 09. Connect the vehicle to the diagnosis system ISTA and activate the navigation system. The code is entered when running the QC1 Pre-Delivery Check test module. Refer to SI B09 04 09. IMPORTANT: No programming is required. Various warning lamps and check control messages relating to the ACSM and ICM systems are illuminated. Many ""No Message"" faults are stored for various control modules. The ACSM and ICM modules may also not be responding to a vehicle test in ISTA. Ground point Z10*10B is loose."

When performing ISTA/D diagnosis and/or a programming procedure (software update) on an affected vehicle, the Footwell Module (FRM) could fail. If an NBT-EVO head unit is swapped into a different vehicle it will enter a locked mode once it recognizes a different VIN. When the vehicle is connected to the diagnostic system ISTA to perform PDI/QC1 the step to activate the navigation system (part of Delete Transport Mode) will automatically request the INITIAL NAV enabling code (VIN-specific) without pre-ordering the enabling code. This enabling code will be automatically delivered through ISTA and it then activates the navigation system.

This Service Information bulletin replaces SI B62 11 18 dated January 2019. Whats New: ? Warranty section - Programming information added. A small black spot remains on the Central Information Displays (CID) illuminated screen which does not go away after a key cycle or sleep mode.

INFORMATION The brightness of the CID will reduce and may switch off completely due to high temperature rise inside the vehicle. This situation is to protect the function of the CID. After lowering the temperature, the normal functions are restored. The increased temperature, protective switch-off is the reason for the fault. The fault code does not indicate a defective head unit. The normal maximum temperature operation for the head unit is between 167 and 194 F. Within these values, the CID will gradually diminish in brightness until it completely switches off. Replacing parts or programing the vehicle will not rectify the situation. The root cause is the very high temperature and is not a fault of the vehicle's systems.

INFORMATION Design of the HUD has limited display area. (It can only show a certain number of text characters). NOTE: Parts replacement or programming the vehicle will not recitify the situation!

Poor Satellite Radio reception CAUSE After this software update there is a slight improvement in Satellite Radio reception for these vehicles when receiving their signal from XM Satellites. This is due to the changeover from Sirius Satellite broadcasting to XM Satellite broadcasting in 2016 (See SI B65 19 15).

While importing a CD to the internal music collection of an NBT head unit the process aborts. You will see 'import error' on the radio display when this occurs. NBT Head Unit software

Customers may be receiving onscreen messages concerning updates of their navigation system. Database mapping procedure in vehicles with the NBT EVO Head Unit (Head Unit high 2) has been changed to automatic, periodic, Over- the-Air (OTA), regional, incremental updates. INFORMATION Customers may not be familiar with the messages seen prior to, during, and after this update which may prompt inquiries. The following information provides an overview of the automatic OTA process that has replaced the previously required BMW center visit for navigation map updates. UPDATE DETAILS Updates can occur up to 4 times per year, ensuring that customers have the newest map data available. At a minimum, updates occur during first 2 years of vehicle ownership at no additional charge to the customer. At additional customers expense updates can also occur for up to 4 years (depending upon vehicle retail date and BMW assist options selected). The Head-up Display is inoperative. Fault code 0xB7F6E3 - HUD: Communication error (HUD does not answer) is stored in the Instrument Cluster (KOMB25). A software error in the instrument cluster prevents the Head-up Display from activating.

The traffic information is intermittently or permanently inoperative. * Traffic flow is not displayed on the navigation map. * The traffic list is empty. 1. The Offboard Availability (backend) system is unavailable and is not sending traffic information. 2. The traffic information feature is not activated correctly.

The customer complains of front door loudspeaker noises when the temperature is below freezing. CAUSE Water from the door window may enter the rear area of the front door medium range loudspeaker basket/cage and can solidify when the temperature drops below freezing, creating the noise.

When replacing the HU-H, the road map database version that was in the defective HU-H must be installed in the new HU-H.

The navigation system is inoperative unless the map is enabled during the QC1 Pre-Delivery Check. INFORMATION New vehicles come equipped with a navigation road map that must be enabled via an enable code (FSC). This process is part of the QC1 Pre-Delivery Check performed with the ISID (ISTA Diagnosis). IMPORTANT: There is no programming involved!

INFORMATION As of 11/2015, all Entry-NAV/Media head units supplied in new vehicles were upgraded for improved noise characteristics and quality. As a part of this upgrade, the hardware updating the sender lists was changed from an "update after every diversity reception interruption or maximum of four minutes" configuration to "regular interval updates (every four minutes) without regard to diversity reception status" configuration. This may cause a delay of up to four minutes for updates to the sender list when leaving areas of poor reception. The last received transmitter, before the entrance into underground car parking or a tunnel, is still received and will show station identification. This fixed interval update does not apply to Traffic Message Channel updates which remain active. This new equipment operation pattern may be noticed by the customer after replacement of their Head unit. All replacement Head units delivered since 01/2016 have the upgraded design. An immediate solution would be for the customer to select one of their stored favorite stations via the menu or favorites buttons. The customer complains that the headlight cleaning system is not working properly and only works after several actuating attempts. CAUSE The "functional" operation of the headlight cleaning system was changed with integration level F020-14-07-500. The functional changes to the headlight cleaning system's operation will occur only after programming the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.53.0 or higher. INFORMATION The headlight cleaning system is no longer activated with the first stalk activation when the lights are on. The functional programming change now requires the stalk to be activated four times before headlight cleaning is activated. The change prevents automatic activation of headlight cleaning when the customer only wants to clean his/her windshield. This is normal operation and no parts should be changed.

INFORMATION When a defective high-pressure fuel injector is identified with an index "02" designation, as shown in the illustration below, all 4 injectors must be replaced at the same time. The vehicle shudders or surges slightly while driving at constant speeds and applying the accelerator very lightly. This symptom is most easily reproduced under light loads when the current fuel consumption is approximately 3448 miles per gallon. The current fuel consumption can selected and monitored in the instrument cluster while driving (the ""fuel consumption, current"" option is set to active in the settings menu). No relevant fault will be stored in the DME memory. DME software; the fuel injection rate under these conditions is too close to the minimum calculated threshold."

When accelerating, particularly when driving off on a slope, there is a buzzing, rattling noise coming from the driver's side underbody, near the footwell area. The quick-release coupling for the fuel line is contacting the fuel line protective plate.

The air conditioner system refrigerant level is low or empty. CAUSE The evaporator is leaking refrigerant.

INFORMATION ONLY The key for successful wrap removal is to have the body cool (below 60 degrees) and dry. The recommendations are as follows: ? Before removing the B-pillar wrap, make sure the car body is dry and cool. ? Removing the wrap in the early morning hours will provide the best results. ? In warmer climates, it is recommended to keep the cars in an A/C environment at least overnight, and then, in the morning, slowly peel off the wrap. ? If there is still any glue residue left, use masking tape to cover the glue area. Wait for a few minutes, and then pull off the masking tape. Repeat this process until the glue is fully removed. After programming the vehicle with ISTA/P 3.56.1, both front parking lights (integrated in the headlights) have been deactivated and no Check Control message is displayed. CAUSE FEM software error in ISTA/P 3.56.1

INFORMATION Inform the customer that the introduction of these expanded frequencies by the wireless mobile providers may be influencing reception quality. BMW is currently working with the wireless mobile providers in order to improve the quality of reception and help alleviate the issues that are caused by the wireless mobile expanded frequencies. Once we have more information about this situation this service information bulletin will be updated. Currently Satellite Radio is provided by SiriusXM for BMW customers via geosynchronous (GEO) satellites located roughly above the equator. This means that the satellite signal to some parts of the United States can come in at an angle as low as 32 degrees to the horizon. Due to this angle, buildings, hills, trees, highway sound blocking walls or other obstacles might block the satellite signal coming from reaching the vehicle receiver antenna and might cause audio cut outs, unless the wireless provider has installed terrestrial repeaters. Reception quality decreases the further north you travel, as the angle of the incoming signal gets smaller. Also adverse weather conditions might affect reception. At this time, in the event of a customer complaint or inquiry on interference noise: Do not replace any parts Do not program or carry out other work on the vehicle Explain to customer about the new Wireless Communications Service (WCS) signals When investigating Satellite Radio cutouts or a temporary loss of reception: Please compare to a similarly equipped vehicle. After replacing and / or programming the instrument cluster with ISTA/P 3.55.0 or higher (integration Level F020-15-03-501 or higher), the CBS (Condition Based Service) displays ""running-in check"" or ""1200 mile service is due"". The parameters of the CBS scopes for oil service, brake fluid, etc, can also be implausible or invalid. CAUSE Error in the CBS mapping data in the FEM (Front Electronics Module) and corrupt data in the instrument cluster during programming."

INFORMATION Currently Satellite Radio is provided by SiriusXM for BMW customers. SiriusXM is the only company currently broadcasting Satellite Radio in North America. Satellite radio is broadcast from two different sets of Satellites using different earth orbits. XM uses geosynchronous (GEO) satellites located roughly above the equator. This means that the satellite signal to some parts of the United States can come in at an angle as low as 32 degrees to the horizon. This is different than Sirius Satellites in a Highly Elliptical Orbit (HEO) which currently come in to the vehicle at a higher angle to the horizon. As of April 2016 Sirius equipped head units will move to the XM Satellites constellation and will show the same location based cutouts. SiriusXM is currently updating the repeater network to cover areas of low reception, but the general disadvantage of geostationary satellites can't be compensated completely. Buildings, hills, trees, highway sound blocking walls or any other obstacles might block the satellite signal coming from the south at a 32 degree elevation angle and might cause audio cut outs in absence of terrestrial repeaters. Reception quality decreases the further north you travel, as the angle of the incoming signal gets flatter. Adverse weather conditions will affect reception. Sirius XM will increase the amount of Sirius and XM repeaters gradually to improve situation in metropolitan areas. An external battery tester (Midtronics EXP-1000) must be used to determine if the battery needs to be replaced. Energy Diagnosis will not prompt for a battery replacement unless the battery is ""aged."" When energy diagnosis identifies the battery as ""aged,"" it means the amount of energy discharge over the course of the life of the battery has reached its maximum (worn out). In most cases, energy diagnosis states that the battery is OK. This is typically an indication of the current State of Charge (SoC), not the State of Health (SoH). The SoC is defined as the current amount of energy left in the battery (displayed as a percentage). The SoH is defined as an evaluation of the condition of the battery over a period of time (displayed as a percentage).
