Technical background It is possible for the engine coolant Thermostat to corrode over time, this corrosion is due to an adverse reaction of the Thermostat material with the engine coolant. The corrosion and subsequent build-up of debris prevents the correct operation of the thermostat when closing, resulting in over cooling. The ECM triggers a DTC when the target engine temperature is outside of the specified parameter.

Customer statement / workshop findings: Oil leak evident from the rear shock absorber/s (Left and/or Right) Technical background: Should oil be leaking from the left or right rear shock absorber as shown in Figures 1 - 2 and 3, the operative should refer to the Measure section of this TPI.

Customer statement: Customer unable to intermittently start the engine with the start button Or Engine starts but customer gets a pop up error on the Kombi. Technical background: The Access/start authorization button requires a certain amount of force applying to activate the internal switches If all 3 switches within the Access/start authorization button are not engaged multiple times in a row the above DTC will store and the customer will get a pop up on the Kombi. The engine however, will still start up.

Technical background: The list of Bentley vehicles below are fitted with air springs as part of the suspension system. Should air leak from the air springs, this will cause the suspension to drop. However, the dropping of the suspension does not necessarily mean that the air spring is faulty. The Measure section of this TPI describes how and where to check for air leaks on the front and rear air springs, the air pump compressor, pipes, valve unit and air reservoirs. This includes potential air leak points on the air springs and also the locations of an air leak that can be repaired without the need to replace an air spring.

Technical background Ensure the fault is as described within the Customer statement. Refer to the videos on the Bentley Hub referencing TPI2064477/-. In the event the knock/clunk is as shown within the videos the instructions within the Measure section should be followed.

Customer statement / workshop findings Workshop findings: Buzzing noise heard at idle from the sump area when the vehicle is elevated on a workshop ramp. The noise cannot be heard from inside the cabin or outside of the vehicle in normal circumstances. Technical background: A buzzing noise can be generated by the oil pump when the engine is running at idle. Measure: Test a comparable vehicle with the same Engine derivative. If the same noise is apparent on the comparable vehicle and no oil pressure warnings or relevant DTCs are stored then the noise can be considered a characteristic of the vehicle and no further action should be taken.

Customer statement / workshop findings: The Start/Stop system functions with the drivers seat belt not fastened although the Owners handbook states that the drivers seat belt must be fastened for the Start/Stop system to function. Technical background On all 202 0model year vehicles specified with a V8 engine, the Start/Stop system will function with the drivers seat belt not fastened although the Owners handbook states the drivers seat belt must be fastened for the Start/Stop system to work, the system in this scenario is functioning correctly. Due to a change to one of the system inhibits, the 2021 model year Owners handbooks will be updated to confirm the Start/Stop system will work with the seat belt unfastened.

Customer statement / workshop findings: Suspension warning lamp illuminated on Driver Instrument Panel (DIP) appeared when changing the Drive dynamics mode using the rotary switch on the front centre console: For example - When changing from Bentley to Sport mode. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) C134911 and/or C134B11 Valve 1 for auxiliary volume 2Short circuit to Ground (GND) evident within address 0074. Technical background: The issue is a result of the incorrect operation of the front air spring damper (right and/or left) between the internal chambers 1 and 2.

Customer statement / workshop findings Engine lubricating oil lamp illuminated on driver instrument panel. Engine lubricating oil requires topping up between services. Technical background: In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal engine components, all internal combustion engines consume a certain amount of engine oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine and may change significantly over the life of the engine. Typically, engines with specified running-in periods consume more oil during the running-in period, and the oil consumption will stabilize after the running-in period. Refer to the Owners Manual for specific running-in procedures. Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on the quality and viscosity of the oil, the RPM at which the engine is operated, ambient temperature and road conditions. Additional factors are the amount of oil dilution from water condensation or fuel residue, and the oxidation level of the oil. Certain driving conditions may negatively influence the rate of oil consumption. This can occur while the vehicle is operated in city driving conditions, for example: stop and go traffic with extended idle periods

illuminated on Driver Instrument Panel. The time to reach the correct engine coolant operating temperature has increased. Diagnostic Trouble Code(DTC) P218100 -Cooling System Performance is stored in the Engine Control Module (ECM), the vehicle warm up time is longer when compared to other vehicles of the same type. Technical background: It is possible for the engine coolant Thermostat to corrode overtime, this corrosion is due to an adverse reaction of the Thermostat material with the engine coolant. The corrosion and subsequent build-up of debris prevents the correct operation of the thermostat when closing, resulting in over cooling. The ECM triggers a DTC when the target engine temperature is outside of the specified parameter.

-Engine overheats. -Unusual cooling fan operation at high temperatures. -There are no signs of coolant leaks both internally or externally. Technical background To heat the engine as quickly as possible during cold starting, delivery of coolant from the coolant pump is interrupted in the warm-up phase by the solenoid valve for the mechanical coolant pump. The solenoid is designed to cut off the vacuum supply to the coolant pump when the engine reaches the maximum temperature, the vacuum cut off allows the engine to start circulating coolant by retracting a sleeve which is situated around the coolant pump impeller. When the solenoid is at fault (sticking open) the vacuum supply is constant, this allows the sleeve to stay in position around the impellor which leads to the symptoms described within the Customer statement/Workshop findings section of this TPI

Customer statement / workshop findings Correct functionality and restrictions of the door soft close system need to be understood to prevent unnecessary customer complaints. Correct operation/function restrictions: The soft close feature is designed to minimalize effort when closing the door. This feature operates automatically. If a door is closed with insufficient force to engage fully, i.e. the door is only closed to the first catch position, the feature will automatically motor the door fully closed. Soft close operation works as per any other motor system. If you work or stress the motor whilst mid-operation the motor could stop working until it is reset (i.e. if you shut the door and re-open it before the soft close has fully engaged into position). If the door is operated over 40 times in less than 10 minutes, soft close operation will be deactivated for the next 10 minutes. If the soft close system does stop functioning through customer misuse, there may be a DTC code stored in the memory, the fault will be active until the ignition is cycled. The DTC will be logged in the relevant door control module memory but will not inhibit the door operation and can be ignored. The DTC will read B122D29: Lock unit for central locking, Implausible signal.

Customer statement / workshop findings: The 48 volt electrical supply cable looks as if it is trapped between the cross brace and transmission heat shield but is the correct condition. Measure: The 48 volt supply cable (1 ) to the anti-roll bar may appear to be trapped between the front subframe and the engine undersheet (arrows). See Figure 1. This would be visible on the LH underside of the vehicle and is the normal condition for this routing of cable. Do NOT raise a DISS technical query for this concern.

Customer statement / workshop findings: Customer reporting dissatisfaction with transmission shift quality in various driving conditions Prior to starting the instructions within this TPI, the Retailer must check and confirm the vehicle is in standard factory condition and has not had any non-approved aftermarket modifications conducted including the modification of the engine control modules (chip tuning) Should any aftermarket modifications be found, the Retailer must make Product Support aware by raising a DISS query to report the details of the modification, you must then await feedback from Product Support before conducting any further repairs relating to the shift quality complaint. Technical background: IMPORTANT: To allow the engine and transmission to adapt to the customers driving style the vehicle MUST either have covered at least 1000 miles/1600 Km or must have been used over a six week period (which ever occurs first) before carrying out the instructions within this TPI Prior to carrying out the instructions within this TPI, the Retailer must confirm with the customer that there is a transmission shift quality issue. Once confirmed carry out the instructions within the Measure section of the TPI ensuring all instructions are strictly adhered to

Carry out the checks within the Measure section of this TPI noting the following: The steps within the Measure section are applicable to vehicles specified with or without the Otto Particulate Filter (OPF) also referred to as the Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) NOTE: OPF/GPF fitment is Region specific. Should any issues be evident and the vehicle is specified with (OPF/GPF) The operative should check to confirm if EB89 (SC21/08 is required) and conduct if applicable. In the event that EB89 (SC21/08)is not required and the symptoms described within this TPI are evident the onward instructions should be followed.

Customer statement / workshop findings: Ticking noise emanating from rear of Bank 1 cylinder head Technical background: Noise from failed vacuum pump. Measure: A specific vacuum pump failure is known to create a ticking noise. This ticking noise, on initial inspection, is easily misinterpreted as a fault in the valve train or fuel injector, when in reality it is more likely to be produced by a defective vacuum pump. Therefore always ensure that this type of noise is identified precisely using a stethoscope. Specifically use the stethoscope to check the vacuum pump located at the rear of Bank 1 cylinder head, when this is found to be the origin of the noise then change the vacuum pump and retest.

Customer statement / workshop findings: Customer statement: Emission control warning signal displayed, engine misfire Workshop findings: Event entries in engine control unit relating to cylinder misfires excessive carbon build up to leading to cylinder leakage and spark plug foul. Technical background: Deviations in the country-specific fuel specifications can lead to carbon deposits on the injectors. If pronounced these deposits can lead to spark plug fouling, cylinder leakage and fouled injectors all influencing combustion in the cylinder. As a result the above event entries are logged in the engine control unit. Measure: - Follow the Misfire best practice TPI 2051187 in order to confirm that the root cause of the misfire is excessive cylinder carbonisation leading to excessive cylinder leakage/fouling

Technical background: We have observed instances where the caps have been difficult to remove once fitted, the issue is caused by corrosion. The valve stem itself is made from aluminium and the accessory valve caps are chromium plated brass, it is possible under certain environmental conditions, particularly winter road salt, for corrosion to take place between these dissimilar metals. Measure: The solution is to apply a thin smear of silicon-based grease, such as Dow Corning high vacuum grease, to the external threads of the valve stem prior to fitting the accessory valve cap. Grease should be applied any time the cap is removed and grease is not evident

The solenoid is designed to cut off the vacuum supply to the coolant pump when the engine reaches the maximum temperature, the vacuum cut off allows the engine to start circulating coolant by retracting a sleeve which is situated around the coolant pump impeller. When the solenoid is at fault (sticking open) the vacuum supply is constant, this allows the sleeve to stay in position around the impellor which leads to the symptoms described within the Customer statement/Workshop findings section of this TPI.

Technical background: In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal engine components, all internal combustion engines consume a certain amount of engine oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine and may change significantly over the life of the engine. Typically, engines with specified running-in periods consume more oil during the running-in period, and the oil consumption will stabilize after the running-in period. Refer to the Owners Manual for specific running-in procedures. Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on the quality and viscosity of the oil, the RPM at which the engine is operated, ambient temperature and road conditions. Additional factors are the amount of oil dilution from water condensation or fuel residue, and the oxidation level of the oil. Certain driving conditions may negatively influence the rate of oil consumption. This can occur while the vehicle is operated in city driving conditions, for example: stop and go traffic with extended idle periods.

Measure: Findings performed on supposedly damaged components have shown that they were of good quality, no damage was found to the ball joint bellows which could of resulted in the leak Grease may leak during the initial assembly of the front lower levers. This due to a maximum deflection of the conical spigot before the lower lever is assembled into the wheel carrier. Over the service life, additional foreign bodies can collect in the corresponding area and stick to the excess grease, which can then be distributed over a larger area If there is no customer complaint about noises (rattling, pinching, creaking) from the area of the front axle and the lower levers have clearance, the operative must remove any excess grease and check the ball joint and bellows for damage If the ball joint/bellows is not damaged, the lower lever does not need to be replaced The level of grease on or around the lower ball joint boot/wheel bearing housing (Figures 1,2 and 3) is deemed as a normal characteristic.

The customer complains that the mobile device sometimes cannot be charged wirelessly.

Customer statement / workshop findings: Key blade can be difficult to remove from key fob. Technical background: Deviations in the key blade and key fob assembly could make it difficult to remove the key blade. Measure: This concern is currently under investigation within the factory. Postpone repairs-please do not replace the key or key blade. A groundless parts replacement under warranty will be redebited. This TPI will be updated as soon as more information is available.
