revved while the vehicle is stationary. The issue does not occur during normal driving, and all instrumentation continues to operate correctly. During periods of low electrical load (and especially when the battery is fully charged), the energy spike generated by the alternator due to the rapid increase in engine speed cannot be completely absorbed by the vehicle electrical system. This leads to a voltage increase that can cause some modules to initiate overvoltage protection. The condition is very brief and is considered normal.

Drivers who drive with their left foot resting on the brake pedal are prone to experience this condition. With the introduction of Electronic Power Control (EPC) (no accelerator cable) to fuel injection systems, an engine RPM control feature has been incorporated into the engine electronic control system software. Customer states that the engine returns to idle speed of approximately 1,400 RPM although the accelerator is depressed, and/or the vehicle hesitates (lacks power on take-off).

Drivers who consciously or unconsciously drive with their left foot resting on the brake pedal are prone to experience this condition. With the introduction of Electronic Power Control (EPC) (no accelerator cable) to fuel injection systems, an engine RPM control feature has been incorporated into the engine electronic control system software. As a result, application of the brake and accelerator pedals at the same time (brake pedal with left foot and accelerator pedal with right foot) results in the following: ? Brake pedal function (normal at all times) overrides any throttle application. ? Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) will not be stored. ? When the brake pedal is applied while the accelerator is depressed, engine RPMs will return to idle speeds of 1400 RPMs after approximately two seconds. ? When the accelerator is applied while the brake pedal is depressed, the vehicle accelerates slower than usual (reduced engine torque).

Noises/inconsistent engine operation after cold start during the catalyst heating phase. The customer may interpret this engine roughness as misfiring. To comply with the legal requirements on exhaust gas emissions according to the LEV-1 and LEV-2 standards, a high exhaust gas quality must be ensured. The necessary catalyst only operates at a temperature over 300C (572F). To achieve this, the catalyst is heated up. The catalyst heating phase is achieved by a late ignition angles and by introducing additional fresh air to the exhaust valves (secondary air system). Late ignition angles make sure that the exhaust gas from the cylinders has a higher temperature. This exhaust gas includes fuel that is un-burnt, and was deliberately injected into great quantities. The secondary air system adds fresh air to the exhaust gas as it leaves the cylinder and the extra fuel is burnt. As a result, the temperatures of the exhaust gas and of the catalyst increase quickly. The afterburning in the exhaust manifold before the catalyst changes the sound characteristic of the engine. This heating-up of the catalyst, including afterburning, is normal and has no effect on the service life of the engine. During this catalyst heating phase, the engine has increased idle speed, may have increased vibrations, and has a different sound characteristic. Depending on conditions, the time of the catalyst heating phase varies.

The engine may have reduced performance without significant loss of power or stalling. Noise is heard coming from the engine compartment, specifically from the High Pressure Fuel Pumps 2. DTCs are stored in the engine control module (ECM). The fuel metering valve of the high-pressure fuel pump is controlled by a specific on/off ratio. If there is a low system voltage, the on/off ratio may not be enough to keep the fuel metering valve constant in all areas. In such a situation, the fuel metering valve is deactivated and the high-pressure fuel pump switches to full supply mode. Because the increased rail pressure does not match the respective driving situation, the DTC appears.

After the airbag control module (J234) has been replaced, the control unit cannot be coded via SVM spec/actual. An SVM code is required to code and parameterize the new service replacement airbag control module. Each model's SVM code is provided in a parts bulletin (GP bulletin), which should have been referenced through ETKA when the module was replaced. The control module cannot be coded until the SVM code has been executed. If the SVM code was not acquired through the GP bulletin in ETKA, follow the instructions in the Service section of this bulletin to update the control module.
