Audi connect Gen1 and Gen2 systems: Differences and troubleshooting.

Read full bulletin

The customer has a general concern related to Audi connect. Different features are included with different generations of the Audi connect system. The Audi connect Gen1 system includes all vehicles that utilize a removable plastic SIM card. The Audi connect Gen2 system includes all vehicles that utilize an embedded SIM card. The root cause of all complaints cannot be attributed to the vehicle hardware because of the backend server configurations that need to be correct in order for Audi connect to work. For most sporadic complaints, the issue typically resides with the MBB backend server or with the source data provider (Google, INRIX, etc.), and not with the vehicle. In rare cases, the mobile network operator (AT&T, T-Mobile) can be the cause of the complaint. For most static complaints, the issue can be attributed to the user account subscription or possibly the vehicle hardware.

Typically, engines with specified break-in periods consume more oil during the break-in period, and the oil consumption will stabilize after the break-in period. Refer to the Owner?s Manual for specific break-in procedures. Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on the quality and viscosity of the oil, the RPM at which the engine is operated, and the ambient temperature and road conditions. Additional factors include the amount of oil dilution from water condensation or fuel residue and the oxidation level of the oil. Utilizing the advanced sensor technology integrated in models equipped with the 3.0 TFSI engine, it is possible to measure oil consumption electronically via a Guided Function test plan.

Drivers who drive with their left foot resting on the brake pedal are prone to experience this condition. With the introduction of Electronic Power Control (EPC) (no accelerator cable) to fuel injection systems, an engine RPM control feature has been incorporated into the engine electronic control system software. Customer states that the engine returns to idle speed of approximately 1,400 RPM although the accelerator is depressed, and/or the vehicle hesitates (lacks power on take-off).

Drivers who consciously or unconsciously drive with their left foot resting on the brake pedal are prone to experience this condition. With the introduction of Electronic Power Control (EPC) (no accelerator cable) to fuel injection systems, an engine RPM control feature has been incorporated into the engine electronic control system software. As a result, application of the brake and accelerator pedals at the same time (brake pedal with left foot and accelerator pedal with right foot) results in the following: ? Brake pedal function (normal at all times) overrides any throttle application. ? Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) will not be stored. ? When the brake pedal is applied while the accelerator is depressed, engine RPMs will return to idle speeds of 1400 RPMs after approximately two seconds. ? When the accelerator is applied while the brake pedal is depressed, the vehicle accelerates slower than usual (reduced engine torque).

There is an unpleasant, musty odor coming from the heating and ventilation system. The odor usually occurs when the vehicle has been sitting unused for five hours or more. The odor usually occurs within 20 to 60 seconds after the vehicle is started. Condensation, which is a normal condition in all A/C systems, can cause a musty odor. If the odor is noticeable in the vehicle when the engine is not turned on, the cause may be mold and mildew in the passenger compartment, and not be related to the A/C system. All other possible sources of the odor must be investigated before this bulletin can be performed.

There is considerable moisture present in the headlamp. The moisture disappears only after extended drives (greater than 10 minutes). There is no external damage to the headlamp which could introduce moisture. Humid air settles on the inside of the glass, causing moisture to appear on the inside of the headlamp lens. Because of the headlamp circulation system, outside air is allowed to flow through the headlamps. The open, water-protected ventilation system (needed for pressure compensation) creates different "climate zones" inside the headlamp, where the lens is either warmed up by the light or cooled down by passing air. When high air humidity and temperature differences exist between the inside of the headlamps and the outside, condensation can form on the inside of the lens, especially in cold and wet weather. This moisture buildup can happen, for example, after a car wash, after steam cleaning of the engine or the front end, or after overnight temperature changes. This condition is more easily visible with headlamps made from clear glass. The moisture is an optical condition which does not affect the headlamp function (light performance) and does not lead to corrosion or damage of the internal headlamp parts. This condition is common to all exterior vehicle lights, and can occur on every headlamp, fog lamp, or rear lamp.

DTC 20645 003 (valves for self-leveling control, mechanical fault) is present in the level control system module, J197 (address word 34). If the dryer on the air supply unit (air compressor) has taken in humidity for a long period of time, it may become saturated. As a result, the increased air humidity may get into the solenoid valve block and create condensation. In freezing temperatures, the condensation can freeze and block the valves, a condition that is recognized as a mechanical fault by the vehicle's self-diagnosis. Humidity can also enter the system if there is too much water in the air filter housing. Excess water can enter the air filter housing if the vehicle is driven in deep water or exposed to splashing water for an extended period of time (such as during off-road use).

Drivability concerns such as hard starting/no starting are present. Outside temperature is sub-freezing. In tank, fuel pump may be making a straining noise. Diesel fuel requires additive blending or ?winterization? to be useable at low temperatures. At temperatures below 20 F (-7 C), No. 2 Diesel with insufficient winterization blending may lose its fluidity due to wax separation. This may clog the fuel filter or in-tank filter, preventing the engine from operating properly. No. 2 Diesel is blended by refineries to various levels of winterization (minimum useable temperature) based on month, geographical location, and the 10th percentile minimum ambient air temperature for the given region. Although rare, during sudden periods of extreme low temperatures (record lows), fuel stations may not be adequately prepared with No. 2 Diesel fuel with sufficient winterization to resist wax formation or ?gelling?.

In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal engine components, all internal combustion engines consume a certain amount of engine oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine, and may change significantly over the life of the engine. If the electronic oil consumption test is not available for this model, perform the test with the conventional scale/oil weighing method. See TSB 2018550 for instructions for the conventional scale/oil weighing method.

Because of the headlamp circulation system, outside air is allowed to flow through the headlamps. The open, water-protected ventilation system (needed for pressure compensation) creates different ?climate zones? inside the headlamp, where the lens is either warmed up by the light or cooled down by passing air.

The vehicle is mechanically in the Park position, but this is not recognized electronically. The gear shifter cannot be moved from the Park position. On vehicles with advanced key, the vehicle cannot be locked by remote control after the engine has been switched off. DTC may be sporadically stored in the vehicle authorization system control module. The Park position of the gear shifter is sporadically not recognized, which causes the ignition key to not be cleared and prevents the vehicle from being locked.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp is on. Climate system heating performance is insufficient. Coolant level warning is on. Engine temperature is elevated. ?Limp Home? mode is active. Faults are stored in the transmission control module. Coolant loss is found from one or more control valves: N82, N509, or N488. Coolant may have migrated into the wiring harness through the connector and into various control units. Climate system heating performance is insufficient due to coolant loss, or due to a faulty N82 control valve. Inspection of the coolant control valves N82, N509, or N488 reveals the presence of coolant inside the electrical connector as shown in the illustration. The connectors, wiring harness, and/or connected control units may have been damaged from exposure to coolant.

Prior to engine replacement, any debris lodged in transferred assemblies must be removed. If the vehicle's engine experienced a serious mechanical problem, it is possible that small pieces of metal debris resulting from the mechanical problem may have become deposited in the intake manifold, air intake hoses, exhaust manifolds, exhaust down-pipes, turbocharger, supercharger, and/or intercooler. If these pieces are not removed prior to the installation and operation of the replacement engine, the pieces may be drawn into the combustion chamber, which can cause a knocking noise and subsequent serious engine damage.

Battery testing and charging for vehicles equipped with a Battery Data Manager (BDM - J367). When the InCharge 940 is used as a battery charger in auto mode, it performs a battery condition test and may prematurely fail the battery if the charging takes place at the jumper posts in the engine compartment. This is due to the added resistance in the system between the battery and jumper posts. When the InCharge 940 is used as a battery charger in manual mode, the battery condition test is not performed.

consume a certain amount of engine oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine, and may change significantly over the life of the engine. If the electronic oil consumption test is not available for this model, perform the test with the conventional scale/oil weighing method. See TSB 2018550 for instructions for the conventional scale/oil weighing method.

When music is streamed to the MMI system with the Bluetooth A2DP connection, the music intermittently pauses or seems to skip. The condition goes away once the phonebook transfer is completed. The MMI uses a limited portion of the total memory to convert the name and phone number fields of downloaded contacts into a voice command (text to speech). Extensive processing takes place if too many letters are used in the first and last name fields or if numbers or special characters are entered. The remaining memory is dynamically assigned to different applications which can also affect the capacity of the voice command processing. The MMI does not respond until the process is completed or it may freeze if phonebook fields are too large or do not follow typical formatting. In addition, the text-to-speech capacity is exceeded and the voice recognition system is rendered inactive.

Squeaking noises are heard when the steering wheel is turned or maneuvered. The noises may be more prevalent in wet weather. The folds of the outer rubber boots on the front axle shafts may come in contact with each other when the steering wheel is turned, causing squeaking noises. These noises are more likely to occur when the vehicle is new. The volume and occurrence of the noise will dissipate after a short break-in period.

the vehicle?s actual location or direction of travel for a long period of time (often as long as 10 minutes). The issue occurs in open sky, with no large buildings obstructing the sky view. The issue is intermittent, but it can occur for long periods of time during a single day. The issue may or may not resolve itself. When the issue occurs, the GPS navigation system satellite reception shows 0 satellites. Due to the infrequency of the issue, this might not be verifiable. (To view the number of satellites being received, go to Nav >> Route >> Select Current Position (first item in list) and scroll up). A DTC related to the GPS antenna or MMI system may be or may not be present. If the sky view is blocked because the vehicle is in a parking structure, below ground, or next to large buildings, it is normal for the GPS location or vehicle direction indicated on the MMI navigation map to not match the vehicle?s actual location or direction of travel. The blocked sky view prevents the vehicle from receiving satellites, and the system may be temporarily lost (for example, the system may show the wrong location on the map screen) until four satellites can be received. This behavior can last for several minutes even in clear sky view when the vehicle exiting a parking structure or underground structure. The MMI can take up to 5-10 minutes to sufficiently get a 3D-GPS fix once the vehicle has clear view of the sky. This is a normal condition, and is not related to the condition described above. Replacing the MMI main unit, replacing the GPS antenna, or updating the MMI software will not change this behavior. A potential antenna hardware failure can affect some model year 2014 - 2015 vehicles.

The following message appears on the MMI display: "Device or cable type not supported". The AMI cable being used is a genuine Audi-branded cable with an Audi part number (see Required Parts and Tools for a list of valid part numbers). The "Device or cable type not supported" message may be displayed when an incorrect AMI cable type is connected to the MMI system. Only cables with an Audi part number (i.e., 4F0.XXX.XXX) are supported by the MMI system. Volkswagen-branded cables look similar, but are not guaranteed to work with Audi MMI systems. The label on the end of an Audi-branded cable has an Audi logo and Audi part number. Audi-branded cables have unique firmware inside the hardware that can determine which MMI system and iOS device are connected to the cable. Volkswagen cables do not have this firmware. The firmware is required to allow the system to function normally due to the different technology available in the different MMI systems and in the different iPhones and iPod Touch devices. In addition, the AMI system was designed to play the music stored locally on the connected device only. Music streaming (from Spotify or Pandora, for example) is not supported, and music stored in the cloud (on Google Play, Amazon Prime, or iTunes Match/iCloud, for example) may drop out, pause, and skip when played.

Beginning with MY2009, the filler necks of various TDI clean diesel vehicles were equipped with a misfueling guard (Figure 1).

Read full bulletin

The guard minimizes the likelihood that fuel other than ultra-low sulfur diesel will be put into the vehicle. The misfueling guard is designed to remain in a locked position when a nozzle with a diameter typically suited for non-diesel fuels (approximately 13/16?, or 20.6mm) is inserted, to prevent further insertion of the nozzle into the filler neck. A nozzle with a larger diameter typically suited for diesel fuel (approximately 15/16?, or 23.8mm) will unlock the misfueling guard when inserted, allowing the nozzle to be further inserted into the filler neck.

Customer may report hearing wind noise from the front door area when the vehicle is driven at highway speeds. After diagnosis, it is determined that the source of the wind noise is the exterior rear view mirrors. Throughout the development of the Audi Q5 and Audi Q7, various features have been added to the exterior rear view mirrors. The added features include the turn signal lamp, side assist lamp, perimeter lamp, etc. As the complexity of the exterior rear view mirror increases, the mirrors become more susceptible to wind noise. The two main sources of wind noise from the exterior rear view mirrors are: the seam surrounding the turn signal lamp and the seam at the mirror base. The modifications explained in the Service section of this bulletin will effectively mitigate the wind noise symptom for the customer.

temperature, as well as environmental conditions. Both the intensity of the wear of the brake system and the type of wear depend on the operating conditions of the vehicle. The wear of the brake discs is determined by the frequency and intensity of the brake operations. Dirt build-up, exposure to sand, long standing times, and road salt or similar, can also promote wear as well as cause scoring marks on the brake discs. The driving style of the driver also influences the wear of the brake system. An overly-aggressive driving style, which results in frequent sharp braking, can lead to more wear (particularly of the brake pads). A gentle driving style can result in very light brake applications. If the brakes are always applied with little pressure, a rust film and other airborne particles may settle on the brake discs and pads. Firm brake operations can help clean off such build-up from the brakes.

Customer may report sporadically hearing the parking brake being actuated after the vehicle has been switched off.

If the customer does not identify the sound as the sound of the parking brake being actuated, he or she may simply complain of hearing noises from the rear brakes. Ignition is switched off. Steering is locked. Park is selected. Parking brake is not engaged. If the electro-mechanical parking brake is not operated for some time, the free play between brake pads and brake discs increases because of normal brake pad wear. The parking brake control unit performs an automatic correction about every 621 miles (1,000 km). On A8 models, the brake pad thickness is also calculated.

DO NOT use this TSB if there is another TSB for same concern applicable to the VIN. This TSB is only intended for diagnostic purposes and does not serve as a guideline for determining warrantable conditions. Customer may report that the steering wheel vibrates or pulsates when the brakes are applied. driving style, environmental conditions, and service history of the vehicle. Additionally, as brake pads and discs wear, their dampening ability is reduced. Disc thickness variation (DTV) is a common condition that contributes to brake pulsation. DTV occurs when the two braking surfaces of the brake disc are no longer parallel to each other. This condition cannot be accurately measured with normal workshop tools.

The customer may report hearing brake noise from front or rear brakes. The customer may describe these noises as a squeal, squeak, grinding, groaning, thumping, or creaking. DO NOT use this TSB if there is another brake noise TSB applicable to the VIN. For additional information, refer to the Audi Brake systems brochure. Brake noise can be attributed to many causes. Brake discs or brake pads are close to or below their wear limit. New brake pads and/or discs have not been properly imbedded after installation. Aftermarket pads or discs are installed. There is debris (such as small stones, grit, road salt, or sand) between brake disc and brake pad. Discs are covered with rust. Rust can form when the vehicle has not been driven for a long period of time. Discs are grooved. There is chemical contamination on the braking surface of the brake disc due to wheel or tire cleaner being sprayed directly onto the brake disc. There are ?pad marks? on the brake disc as a result of brake pad material transferring to the discs. Pad marks can occur when a vehicle has been parked for long periods of time in a wet or snowy environment.

Wheel bolt requires torque adjustment. Torque sticks, torque extension bars, and impact guns/wrenches are not approved by Audi of America, Inc., and should not be used to apply torque to wheel bolts. Always use a calibrated torque wrench to attain the correct wheel bolt torque and follow the proper wheel tightening procedure as outlined in Elsa. Proper use of a calibrated torque wrench ensures that all wheel bolts are tightened equally and reduces the chances of repeat repairs. Using methods other than a calibrated torque wrench to attain correct wheel bolt torque may lead to problems.

This requires a gradual move of the clutch linings toward the optimal operating points in the most diverse load conditions. As a result, sporadic driving power disruptions lasting for less than a second or reduced shift comfort are possible over the first 500 miles. This is normal, and these issues will decrease over time. The issues can also occur if the adaptation values of the gearbox were deleted.

The customer may report flickering of the dash insert lighting, of the A/C control panel lighting, or of the inside light. The condition occurs when the accelerator is pressed while the vehicle is in P or N, or when the vehicle is shifted down when moving downhill. Only vehicles with PR number 8GH may be affected. When high electricity consumers are switched off when the battery is fully charged, the energy generated by the alternator is sometimes too great for the power system to absorb. This may lead to briefly-increased voltage, causing the lights to flicker.
