Audi connect Gen1 and Gen2 systems: Differences and troubleshooting.
Read full bulletin
The customer has a general concern related to Audi connect. Different features are included with different generations of the Audi connect system. The Audi connect Gen1 system includes all vehicles that utilize a removable plastic SIM card. The Audi connect Gen2 system includes all vehicles that utilize an embedded SIM card. The root cause of all complaints cannot be attributed to the vehicle hardware because of the backend server configurations that need to be correct in order for Audi connect to work. For most sporadic complaints, the issue typically resides with the MBB backend server or with the source data provider (Google, INRIX, etc.), and not with the vehicle. In rare cases, the mobile network operator (AT&T, T-Mobile) can be the cause of the complaint. For most static complaints, the issue can be attributed to the user account subscription or possibly the vehicle hardware.

Prior to engine replacement, any debris lodged in transferred assemblies must be removed. If the engine experienced a serious mechanical problem, it is possible that small pieces of metal debris resulting from the mechanical problem may have become deposited in the intake manifold, air intake hoses, exhaust manifolds, exhaust down-pipes, turbocharger, supercharger, and/or intercooler. If these metal debris pieces are not removed prior to the installation and operation of the replacement engine, they could be drawn into the combustion chamber, which can cause a knocking noise and subsequent serious engine damage.

The customer would like to change the MMI system language to a different language that is not already supported by MMI. The customer may report hearing noises from the upper dashboard area when driving on poor roads, making phone calls, or playing music. The noise can be caused by unfavorable tolerances between the instrument panel speaker and the center speaker trim. A speaker that has been incorrectly installed can make the condition worse. Because there is no attachment to the trim carrier in the speaker cut-out, this area is the likely source of the vibration.

The customer complains that when he or she is trying to place a phone call from the vehicle while using a Bluetooth-connected phone, the phone call disconnects before it begins and an error shows on the MMI display. The message may be "Function not supported" or "Network error". The customer is using a phone with the Android operating system. In addition, Skype, or another network-based communication software, is installed on the phone. Call can be placed directly from the phone without a problem. When the phone receives the request to place a call from the vehicle, a prompt appears on the phone asking the user to choose how the call should be placed. If the prompt is ignored, the MMI system disconnects the call because it assumes that the phone is not responding.

Starting with the MIB MMI in model year 2015 A3 vehicles and with the MIB-2 MMI in model year 2016 A6 and A7 vehicles, the traffic incident list display has changed. By default, traffic incidents are now listed first by roads with high priority, and second by alphabetical order (or numerical order) based on the name of the road. Roads that have higher speeds (interstates and major highways) are given highest priority. If a route is programmed into the navigation system, the MIB MMI will display traffic incidents that affect the programmed route near the top of the list. If no route is programmed, the default sorting applies.

Customer states all or part of the picture generated from the top view camera system has an unnatural hue. To achieve a natural-looking top view camera image, the camera system constantly adjusts the displayed colors based on environmental conditions. In certain lighting conditions, the system responds to vibrant nearby colors (from the vehicle or other objects) by automatically adding a complementary color to rebalance toward white, which can lead to color deviations. For example, a red object can cause the system to add a green hue. The strength of the added color depends on the brightness of the object and the ambient light.

The option to send new text messages cannot be accessed through the Messages function in the MIB MMI telephone menu. Additionally, the option to send text messages using ?New? is greyed-out in the Messages menu. Received text messages cannot be displayed. The MIB High system is the first Audi MMI system that supports the Bluetooth Message Access Profile (MAP). Some mobile phones do not have the complete set of MAP features and functions implemented in their operating systems, which affects the available options in the MMI system. For model year 2016 A6 and A7 vehicles with the MIB2 MMI system, the MMI will automatically attempt to connect to MAP when the phone is first paired to Bluetooth. If the phone does not allow the MMI to access the phone?s text messages (MAP), then it will not be possible to manually force the MMI to make this connection (although it was possible with the MIB1 system). Instead, the customer will need to activate this feature on the phone after the pairing process, then disconnect and reconnect the Bluetooth connection to the MMI.
The navigation map does not show the latest roads or points of interest.

The map download provided by the myAudi website cannot be performed. The customer does not know how to obtain the data or cannot perform the update after downloading the data. The MMI is slow to respond or freezes during the map update. For vehicles with MIB2, the MMI over-the-air map update does not allow for a full map update and shows greyed-out regions. The customer is concerned that the OTA map update will consume too much data from the Audi connect data subscription.
The customer complains that the display on the MMI screen is incomplete and text is missing.

The addresses and contacts stored in the Navigation >> Favorites, Navigation >> Directory, and Navigation >> Last destinations submenus disappear intermittently. Intermittently, the MMI system does not appear to remember that the user's myAudi PIN has already been entered, and it requires the user to enter the PIN again. The voice recognition system does not easily recognize commands spoken by the driver. This condition can be consistent or intermittent. Multiple voice recognition training sessions can be stored in the MMI for different users when different phones are Bluetooth-paired during each training session. If no phone is paired, the training session will be stored under a default profile. This profile will be used each time the voice recognition system is used without a phone being paired to the MMI. The following message appears on the MMI display: "Device or cable type not supported". The AMI cable being used is a genuine Audi-branded cable with an Audi part number (see Required Parts and Tools for a list of valid part numbers). The "Device or cable type not supported" message may be displayed when an incorrect AMI cable type is connected to the MMI system. Only cables with an Audi part number (i.e., 4F0.XXX.XXX) are supported by the MMI system. Volkswagen-branded cables look similar, but are not guaranteed to work with Audi MMI systems. The label on the end of an Audi-branded cable has an Audi logo and Audi part number. Audi-branded cables have unique firmware inside the hardware that can determine which MMI system and iOS device are connected to the cable. Volkswagen cables do not have this firmware. The firmware is required to allow the system to function normally due to the different technology available in the different MMI systems and in the different iPhones and iPod Touch devices. In addition, the AMI system was designed to play the music stored locally on the connected device only. Music streaming (from Spotify or Pandora, for example) is not supported, and music stored in the cloud (on Google Play, Amazon Prime, or iTunes Match/iCloud, for example) may drop out, pause, and skip when played.

If the user?s Bluetooth phone (the same phone that was paired to the vehicle when the PIN was entered initially) is paired to the vehicle, the user will not be prompted to re-enter the PIN after it has been entered. 2016 A6 and A7 vehicles have a known software issue that requires the myAudi PIN to be entered with each ignition cycle. Multiple voice recognition training sessions can be stored in the MMI for different users when different phones are Bluetooth-paired during each training session. When the vehicle is completely refueled, the vehicle range (?distance to empty?) that is displayed is different than the vehicle range that was displayed the last time the vehicle was completely refueled. The displayed vehicle range drops inconsistently. After the vehicle is refueled, the displayed vehicle range does not change for a long period of time. When the vehicle is driven on hilly roads for a long period of time, the displayed vehicle range suddenly changes by a significant amount. There are no DTCs related to fuel senders stored in the instrument cluster control module, J285 (address word 17). This condition does not involve or affect the accuracy of the fuel level indicator, but only the estimated distance to empty display on the on-board computer.

After one or both of the front door control units (J386/J387) is replaced, one or both of the rear door control units (J3888/J389) cannot be coded or parameterized via an SVM specified vs. actual comparison (spec/actual). The parameter data in the software coding container has changed for the front and rear door control units. As a result, an SVM code is required to update the parameter data for any replacement control unit. When the voice recognition system is used, a message appears in the MMI screen stating that the phone book is too large and that the voice recognition system cannot be used. When music is streamed to the MMI system with the Bluetooth A2DP connection, the music intermittently pauses or seems to skip. The condition goes away once the phonebook transfer is completed. The MMI uses a limited portion of the total memory to convert the name and phone number fields of downloaded contacts into a voice command (text to speech). Extensive processing takes place if too many letters are used in the first and last name fields or if numbers or special characters are entered. The remaining memory is dynamically assigned to different applications which can also affect the capacity of the voice command processing. The MMI does not respond until the process is completed or it may freeze if phonebook fields are too large or do not follow typical formatting. In addition, the text-to-speech capacity is exceeded and the voice recognition system is rendered inactive.

Android phones connect to the MMI using the Media Transport Protocol (MTP). If the phone is not correctly configured to use MTP, it is possible that the MMI does not see the phone. When correctly set up, the MMI sees the phone as a media storage device (similar to a USB drive or external hard drive). The MMI can only see music that was manually transferred to the phone from a computer. Any music that was downloaded to the phone through a music app (such as the Google Play music app) cannot be seen by the MMI. This is due to an Android operating system restriction and is not a limitation of the MMI.

temperature, as well as environmental conditions. Both the intensity of the wear of the brake system and the type of wear depend on the operating conditions of the vehicle. The wear of the brake discs is determined by the frequency and intensity of the brake operations. Dirt build-up, exposure to sand, long standing times, and road salt or similar, can also promote wear as well as cause scoring marks on the brake discs. The driving style of the driver also influences the wear of the brake system. An overly-aggressive driving style, which results in frequent sharp braking, can lead to more wear (particularly of the brake pads). A gentle driving style can result in very light brake applications. If the brakes are always applied with little pressure, a rust film and other airborne particles may settle on the brake discs and pads. Firm brake operations can help clean off such build-up from the brakes.

DO NOT use this TSB if there is another TSB for same concern applicable to the VIN. This TSB is only intended for diagnostic purposes and does not serve as a guideline for determining warrantable conditions. Customer may report that the steering wheel vibrates or pulsates when the brakes are applied. driving style, environmental conditions, and service history of the vehicle. Additionally, as brake pads and discs wear, their dampening ability is reduced. Disc thickness variation (DTV) is a common condition that contributes to brake pulsation. DTV occurs when the two braking surfaces of the brake disc are no longer parallel to each other. This condition cannot be accurately measured with normal workshop tools.

The customer may report hearing brake noise from front or rear brakes. The customer may describe these noises as a squeal, squeak, grinding, groaning, thumping, or creaking. DO NOT use this TSB if there is another brake noise TSB applicable to the VIN. For additional information, refer to the Audi Brake systems brochure. Brake noise can be attributed to many causes. Brake discs or brake pads are close to or below their wear limit. New brake pads and/or discs have not been properly imbedded after installation. Aftermarket pads or discs are installed. There is debris (such as small stones, grit, road salt, or sand) between brake disc and brake pad. Discs are covered with rust. Rust can form when the vehicle has not been driven for a long period of time. Discs are grooved. There is chemical contamination on the braking surface of the brake disc due to wheel or tire cleaner being sprayed directly onto the brake disc. There are ?pad marks? on the brake disc as a result of brake pad material transferring to the discs. Pad marks can occur when a vehicle has been parked for long periods of time in a wet or snowy environment.

Oil appears on one or several shock absorbers. Oil may appear on a shock absorber As a result of a leak because the shock absorber is damaged. Oil may appear on a shock absorber As a result of residue from when the shock was filled during production, or as a result of slight condensation in the seal area. This small amount of oil is for lubrication and it reduces wear on the seal.
