consume a certain amount of engine oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine, and may change significantly over the life of the engine. Typically, engines with specified break-in periods consume more oil during the break-in period, and the oil consumption will stabilize after the break-in period. Refer to the Owner?s Manual for specific break-in procedures. Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on the quality and viscosity of the oil, the RPM at which the engine is operated, and the ambient temperature and road conditions. Additional factors are the amount of oil dilution from water condensation or fuel residue and the oxidation level of the oil. Utilizing the advanced sensor technology integrated in the 2009> B8 platform (A4, allroad, A5, A5 Cabriolet, A6, and Q5) equipped with the 2.0 TFSI (CAEB, CPMA) engine, it is possible to measure oil consumption electronically via a Guided Function test plan.

Drivers who consciously or unconsciously drive with their left foot resting on the brake pedal are prone to experience this condition. With the introduction of Electronic Power Control (EPC) (no accelerator cable) to fuel injection systems, an engine RPM control feature has been incorporated into the engine electronic control system software. As a result, application of the brake and accelerator pedals at the same time (brake pedal with left foot and accelerator pedal with right foot) results in the following: ? Brake pedal function (normal at all times) overrides any throttle application. ? Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) will not be stored. ? When the brake pedal is applied while the accelerator is depressed, engine RPMs will return to idle speeds of 1400 RPMs after approximately two seconds. ? When the accelerator is applied while the brake pedal is depressed, the vehicle accelerates slower than usual (reduced engine torque).

When the InCharge 940 is used as a battery charger in auto mode, it performs a battery condition test and may prematurely fail the battery if the charging takes place at the jumper posts in the engine compartment. This is due to the added resistance in the system between the battery and jumper posts. When the InCharge 940 is used as a battery charger in manual mode, the battery condition test is not performed.

There is an unpleasant, musty odor coming from the heating and ventilation system. The odor usually occurs when the vehicle has been sitting unused for five hours or more. The odor usually occurs within 20 to 60 seconds after the vehicle is started. Condensation, which is a normal condition in all A/C systems, can cause a musty odor. If the odor is noticeable in the vehicle when the engine is not turned on, the cause may be mold and mildew in the passenger compartment, and not be related to the A/C system. All other possible sources of the odor must be investigated before this bulletin can be performed.

cover cleaning of the engine cylinder head secondary air ports to remove carbon buildup under specific conditions to 10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's original in-service date for certain 2009-12 Model Year Audi vehicles with 3.2L engine, and certain 2009-2013 Model Year Audi vehicles with 3.0T engines. The vehicle's original in-service date is defined as the date the vehicle was delivered to either the original purchaser or the original lessee; or if the vehicle was first placed in service as a "demonstrator" or "company" car, on the date such vehicle was first placed in service. The warranty extension is fully transferable to subsequent owners. Audi has determined that under certain driving conditions, carbon buildup can occur in the engine cylinder head secondary airports. Due to the presence of specific fault codes caused by this carbon buildup, the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) on the instrument cluster may illuminate. The MIL is part of the on-board diagnostic system. In some locales, an illuminated MIL could cause the vehicle to fail an IM emissions inspection, vehicle registration application could be denied. Audi will diagnose, and if necessary clean the engine cylinder head secondary air ports to remove the carbon buildup at no cost to the customer as long as the vehicle is within the time and mileage limits of the warranty extension. This warranty extension covers only the diagnosis and cleaning of the cylinder head secondary air ports to remove the carbon buildup. Reimbursement is applicable only to the repairs described in this Warranty Bulletin.

Please note that it is highly unlikely that the vehicle will experience an issue with multiple fuel injectors at the same time. The MIL is part of the on-board diagnostic system. Please refer to the owner's manual for additional information about the MIL. In some locales, an illuminated Malfunction Indicator Lamp could cause the vehicle to fail an IM emissions inspection, and the vehicle registration application could be denied. Be aware that other conditions (unrelated to the issue described in this bulletin) may cause the MIL in the vehicle to illuminate. Customers should be prepared to cover all diagnosis and repair costs for these other, unrelated conditions. This warranty extension covers only the diagnosis and replacement of a faulty fuel injector.

Noises/inconsistent engine operation after cold start during the catalyst heating phase. The customer may interpret this engine roughness as misfiring. To comply with the legal requirements on exhaust gas emissions according to the LEV-1 and LEV-2 standards, a high exhaust gas quality must be ensured. The necessary catalyst only operates at a temperature over 300C (572F). To achieve this, the catalyst is heated up. The catalyst heating phase is achieved by a late ignition angles and by introducing additional fresh air to the exhaust valves (secondary air system). Late ignition angles make sure that the exhaust gas from the cylinders has a higher temperature. This exhaust gas includes fuel that is un-burnt, and was deliberately injected into great quantities. The secondary air system adds fresh air to the exhaust gas as it leaves the cylinder and the extra fuel is burnt. As a result, the temperatures of the exhaust gas and of the catalyst increase quickly. The afterburning in the exhaust manifold before the catalyst changes the sound characteristic of the engine. This heating-up of the catalyst, including afterburning, is normal and has no effect on the service life of the engine. During this catalyst heating phase, the engine has increased idle speed, may have increased vibrations, and has a different sound characteristic. Depending on conditions, the time of the catalyst heating phase varies.

In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal engine components, all internal combustion engines consume a certain amount of engine oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine and may change significantly over the life of the engine. Typically, engines with specified break-in periods consume more oil during the break-in period, and the oil consumption will stabilize after the break-in period. Refer to the Owner?s Manual for specific break-in procedures. Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on the quality and viscosity of the oil, the RPM at which the engine is operated, the ambient temperature and road conditions. Additional factors are the amount of oil dilution from water condensation or fuel residue and the oxidation level of the oil. Under certain driving conditions, internal engine pressure conditions in the 2.0 TFSI engine can negatively influence the rate of oil consumption. This condition can occur while the vehicle is operated in metro driving conditions; for example: stop-and-go traffic with extended idle periods.

As a result, the temperature of the exhaust gas and of the catalyst increases quickly. The afterburning in the exhaust manifold before catalyst changes the sound characteristic of the engine. This heating-up of the catalyst, including afterburning, is normal and has no effect on the service life of the engine. During this catalyst heating phase the engine has increased idle speed, may have increased vibrations, and a different sound characteristic. Depending on conditions the time of the catalyst heating phase varies.

After the activation of the cam actuator to change to the other cam profile, the pin of the actuator is pushed back in by the cam. This is confirmed by a voltage impulse, which is registered by the engine control unit and confirms the operation. If this does not happen, or not at the right time, a DTC "implausible signal" is saved in ECM memory. Check the distance of the pin tip of the cam actuator for valve lift system to the camshaft when it is not operated with a gauge. The measurement of the tip to the basic camshaft circle outside of the groove must be taken. If this measurement is 0.9mm, the actuator 06E103697J must be installed. The actuator 06E103697J must only be used, if the measurement is 0.9mm or bigger.

Condensation is visible on the inside of the headlight, taillight, fog light, side marker light, front turn signal, daytime running lights, or third brake light lens. Damp air settles on the inside of a cold lens, which creates condensation. The headlight circulation system allows air from the outside to flow through the headlights. This open waterprotected ventilation system (needed for pressure compensation) creates different climate zones in the headlight: very warm areas, where the lens is warmed up by the light, and relatively cool areas, where the lens is cooled own by the air flow. Considerable differences in humidity and temperature between the inside and the outside of the headlights, even while driving, can lead to condensation. This is especially true in cold and wet weather, but it can also happen after a car wash, after steam cleaning the engine or the front end, with overnight temperature changes, etc. This phenomenon is more visible on lenses made of clear glass than on lenses with patterns. The moisture does not affect the headlight function (light performance) and does not lead to corrosion or other damage to headlight parts.
The customer may state that the outside ambient temperature display is incorrect.

To achieve a smoothening effect of the displayed outside ambient temperature, the value shown does not instantaneously follow the temperature sensor measurement. The display will not change faster than 4 F (2 C) per minute. This concept applies to both falling and rising temperatures. A programming strategy is also implemented to avoid incorrect readings on a parked vehicle, due to the temperature sensor being affected by outside influences such as radiant heat from the engine bay, elevated road surface temperatures, etc.

Air conditioning is inoperative. The HVAC blower functions normally. Battery discharged; however, when charged, there is no bus silence when vehicle ignition is off. The A/C pressure/temperature sensor, G395, leaks refrigerant. This causes sensor G395 to show an incorrect or implausible value when reading MVBs. An incorrect signal or a low refrigerant level in the system can cause the air conditioning compressor to deactivate. The LIN cable connecting the vehicle electrical system control module, J519, to sensor G395 is pinched or cut. This affects the A4/S4, A5/S5 Coupe and Cabriolet, and Q5 vehicles. The A6 and A8 are not affected by this type of failure. The pressure sensor G395/G65 sends an incorrect signal that prevents bus silence and the battery is discharged. Sensor G395 is a LIN slave of the vehicle electrical system control module. The vehicle electrical system control module transfers the information provided by the sensor via the comfort data bus to the climate control module, J255.

Customer may report that cracking, grinding, rattling, humming, whining, or similar interference is coming from one or more speakers. Parts of the speakers (such as the brackets, cables, or covers) or parts of the interior fittings (such as door covers, rear shelf, facings, or covers) can vibrate at certain frequencies, causing noises. The radio tuner or other control modules may be affected by electromagnetic interference from aftermarket electronic devices.

The customer may report that the handheld transmitter cannot be programmed to the garage door opener control module, J530. The customer's door opener system may not be compatible with J530. The battery in the handheld transmitter may be too weak for a good signal. The battery charge may be sufficient to operate the garage door opener, but not enough to program the remote transmitter to the vehicle system. In A4 Model Years 2005 - 2006 and A3 Model Year 2009, the actual location of the garage door opener control module differs from the location shown in the owner's manual (opposite side of front bumper). The customer may misunderstand the programming procedure, particularly if the customer's HomeLink opener system is using an alternate code. The handheld transmitter's programming function may become inoperative, or the transmitter is too far away from J530. Interference prevents the communication between handheld transmitter and J530. If the vehicle flashes during the programming of a handheld transmitter, this does not necessarily indicate that the programming was successful; it only indicates that the vehicle has recognized and saved a signal.

The customer is able to program one or more of the Homelink buttons using their garage door remote, but after a few days or weeks, one or more of the programmed Homelink buttons no longer functions. The LED on the Homelink button that is no longer functioning now flashes slowly, indicating that no programming is stored. The customer's transmitter operates at 295Mhz. No DTCs are stored in any control units. At the workshop, the Homelink system can be programmed to the workshop garage door successfully. No trouble is found. The garage door opener control module, J530, was designed with an operational frequency range in which the 295Mhz frequency works correctly during the initial programming of the system. Over time, the transmitting frequency can drift out of range (especially in warmer climates), causing the system to lose its programming.

Sequence of error messages are seen on the radio display screen after a CD was loaded into or removed from the internal CD drive. "Drive defective. The error could be corrected by resetting it (see radio system owner's manual). Otherwise, contact your Audi dealer." "The CD-drive is damaged and was therefore deactivated." The CD drive cannot be selected in the Source list and is described as "damaged." After the ignition is cycled or a radio reset performed, the CD drive is fully operational. DTC 00468 (CD-ROM Drive -R92- Faulty) is stored in the radio (address word 56). The DTC will be sporadic if the ignition has been cycled or a radio reset performed and will automatically be cleared after 40 ignition cycles without a reoccurrence. Only vehicles with the CAN-based generation 3 radio (Concert (PR 8UQ) or Symphony (PR 8YN)) are affected.

Light bulb warning light and the message Vehicle lights: malfunction is displayed in the instrument cluster display. DTC 03280 (Light switch position implausible signal) is stored in the vehicle electrical system control module, J519 (09). Exterior lights are functioning properly. If the headlight switch is moved to an intermediate position and remains there, the light bulb warning light and the error message appear after approximately ten seconds. Once displayed, the message turns off after approximately five seconds. The light bulb warning light turns off only after the headlight switch is turned to a defined position, and the status of DTC 03280 is changed to sporadic. Central locking via remote control does not work either sporadically or permanently. The locks can still be operated manually. Missing synchronization between the remote control key and vehicle because the battery has been disconnected or the battery of the remote control has been replaced. If other senders operate in the same frequency range (mobile phones, TV stations, wireless headphones, baby monitors, other vehicle remote controls, etc.), the remote control key may have been temporarily switched off because a clear identification of the remote control key is not possible. This affects the A4/S4, A5/S5 Coupe and Cabriolet, and Audi Q5 vehicles. The A6 and A8 are not affected by this type of failure. The pressure sensor G395/G65 sends an incorrect signal that prevents bus silence and the battery is discharged. The customer is able to program one or more of the Homelink buttons using their garage door remote, but after a few days or weeks, one or more of the programmed Homelink buttons no longer function. The LED on the Homelink button that is no longer functioning now flashes slowly, indicating that no programming is stored. The customer?s transmitter operates at 295Mhz. At the workshop, the Homelink system can be programmed to the workshop garage door successfully. No trouble is found. No DTCs are stored in any control units. The garage door opener control module, J530, was designed with an operational frequency range in which the 295Mhz frequency works correctly during the initial programming of the system. Over time, the transmitting frequency can drift out of range (especially in warmer climates), causing the system to lose its programming.

The following message appears on the MMI display: "Device or cable type not supported". The AMI cable being used is a genuine Audi-branded cable with an Audi part number (see Required Parts and Tools for a list of valid part numbers). The "Device or cable type not supported" message may be displayed when an incorrect AMI cable type is connected to the MMI system. Only cables with an Audi part number (i.e., 4F0.XXX.XXX) are supported by the MMI system. Volkswagen-branded cables look similar, but are not guaranteed to work with Audi MMI systems. The label on the end of an Audi-branded cable has an Audi logo and Audi part number. Audi-branded cables have unique firmware inside the hardware that can determine which MMI system and iOS device are connected to the cable. Volkswagen cables do not have this firmware. The firmware is required to allow the system to function normally due to the different technology available in the different MMI systems and in the different iPhones and iPod Touch devices. In addition, the AMI system was designed to play the music stored locally on the connected device only. Music streaming (from Spotify or Pandora, for example) is not supported, and music stored in the cloud (on Google Play, Amazon Prime, or iTunes Match/iCloud, for example) may drop out, pause, and skip when played.

temperature, as well as environmental conditions. Both the intensity of the wear of the brake system and the type of wear depend on the operating conditions of the vehicle. The wear of the brake discs is determined by the frequency and intensity of the brake operations. Dirt build-up, exposure to sand, long standing times, and road salt or similar, can also promote wear as well as cause scoring marks on the brake discs. The driving style of the driver also influences the wear of the brake system. An overly-aggressive driving style, which results in frequent sharp braking, can lead to more wear (particularly of the brake pads). A gentle driving style can result in very light brake applications. If the brakes are always applied with little pressure, a rust film and other airborne particles may settle on the brake discs and pads. Firm brake operations can help clean off such build-up from the brakes.

DO NOT use this TSB if there is another TSB for same concern applicable to the VIN. This TSB is only intended for diagnostic purposes and does not serve as a guideline for determining warrantable conditions. Customer may report that the steering wheel vibrates or pulsates when the brakes are applied. driving style, environmental conditions, and service history of the vehicle. Additionally, as brake pads and discs wear, their dampening ability is reduced. Disc thickness variation (DTV) is a common condition that contributes to brake pulsation. DTV occurs when the two braking surfaces of the brake disc are no longer parallel to each other. This condition cannot be accurately measured with normal workshop tools.

No warning light is on and the brake electronics work correctly. Due to a supersession of parts, only ABS/ESP hydraulic control units prepared for vehicles equipped with the start-stop feature are supplied as replacement parts. Once installed, the new unit stores DTC 01044 (Control Unit Incorrectly Coded) because it does not receive a response on the data bus when checking for the start-stop feature. The missing response results in the DTC entry. Within the scenario described in the Condition section of this TSB, the missing start-stop response is the only reason for this DTC. In all other respects the coding of the ABS/ESP control unit matches the vehicle data. The entry does not affect the function of the brake electronics and no warning appears in the instrument cluster. There are no effects on performance or safety.

Harsh 2-1 shift with automatic gearbox (0B6) - A4, A5
Rough gear changes both when accelerating and slowing down
Customer may report the vehicle holds second gear intermittently

Automatic transmission fluid is leaking at the sump pan gasket.
After a mechatronics, torque converter, or complete gearbox replacement, the clutches must be adapted to the new component.

This requires a gradual move of the clutch linings toward the optimal operating points in the most diverse load conditions. As a result, sporadic driving power disruptions lasting for less than a second or reduced shift comfort are possible over the first 500 miles. This is normal, and these issues will decrease over time. The issues can also occur if the adaptation values of the gearbox were deleted.
New software in the Transmission Control Module (J217) addressed the condition.
Customer states constant howling, droning, or scraping noises heard from the front of the vehicle when accelerating lightly.

The customer may report flickering of the dash insert lighting, of the A/C control panel lighting, or of the inside light. The condition occurs when the accelerator is pressed while the vehicle is in P or N, or when the vehicle is shifted down when moving downhill. Only vehicles with PR number 8GH may be affected. When high electricity consumers are switched off when the battery is fully charged, the energy generated by the alternator is sometimes too great for the power system to absorb. This may lead to briefly-increased voltage, causing the lights to flicker.

The customer may report that the illumination of the dash insert, the air conditioning control panel or the inside light flickers when briefly pressing the accelerator in P or N or when shifting down while driving downhill. Wheel bolt requires torque adjustment. Torque sticks, torque extension bars, and impact guns/wrenches are not approved by Audi of America, Inc., and should not be used to apply torque to wheel bolts. Always use a calibrated torque wrench to attain the correct wheel bolt torque and follow the proper wheel tightening procedure as outlined in Elsa. Proper use of a calibrated torque wrench ensures that all wheel bolts are tightened equally and reduces the chances of repeat repairs. Using methods other than a calibrated torque wrench to attain correct wheel bolt torque may lead to problems.
